Days 1–2 — Depart the U.S. for Málaga, Spain
Fly overnight to Málaga, where you’ll meet fellow travelers and trip staff to transfer to your elegant resort, nestled against the hills in seaside Marbella. Kick off your celestial adventure on Spain’s Costa del Sol with a festive welcome reception and dinner at the hotel. (R,D)
Day 3 — Gibraltar
Each morning during your stay, a full buffet breakfast will be served. Travel to Gibraltar, a British overseas territory set on the southernmost tip of Iberia and dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar. Rising nearly 1,400 feet, this dramatic limestone crag marks the gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It was known as one of the Pillars of Hercules in ancient Greek mythology and established as a watchtower by the Moors in the 12th century. Learn about the enclave’s fascinating history from the Neanderthals to the modern day as you explore the town. Enjoy expansive views over the Mediterranean from the rock—and perhaps a sighting of Barbary macaques, a tail-less primate indigenous to North Africa and Gibraltar. (B,L)
Day 4 — Granada
A scenic journey brings you to Granada, where the splendid Alhambra fortress-palace perches above the city against a backdrop of mountains. Explore the elegant halls and courtyards of this World Heritage site, discovering bubbling fountains and pools and exquisite tiles and stuccowork. Visit the ninth-century Alcazaba castle that guards the Alhambra—one of the oldest parts of the fortress-palace, and stroll through the peaceful gardens of the Generalife summer palace. Sit down to lunch at a parador on the grounds of the Alhambra. Return to Marbella and dine independently. (B,L)
Day 5 — Málaga
Travel along the coast to the beach town of Málaga, the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and recently the site of an exciting cultural renaissance. On a tour of the historic center, step into the Renaissance cathedral known as La Manquita and see beautiful woodcarvings inside. Visit the ancient Roman theater and the Alcazaba, a hilltop Moorish fortress that offers sweeping views of the city. After lunch on your own, enjoy a guided visit to the Museo Picasso Málaga, which features sketches and paintings from many periods of the artist’s long career. Venture to a local tavern for a spirited flamenco performance. Return to Marbella in time for dinner with fellow travelers at a local restaurant. (B,D)
Day 6 — Stargazing in Marbella
Set out on a walking tour of old Marbella, following its labyrinth of cobbled streets to historic churches and picturesque piazzas. Enjoy lunch together while in town. You’ll have time at leisure in the afternoon before gathering for a presentation by a local speaker on the history of Andalusia. After dinner on your own tonight, join astronomers for a stargazing party on the hotel grounds. (B,L)
Day 7— Eclipse Day
Head outside this morning to witness the total solar eclipse at a viewing party on the hotel grounds. Watch the moon begin its partial eclipse at 9:41 a.m., reaching totality just after 10:45. Totality in Marbella is expected to last for 3 minutes and 21 seconds. Savor a festive lunch on the hotel terrace, then take advantage of a free afternoon to pursue your own interests. Raise a toast to totality at a celebratory farewell reception and dinner tonight. (B,L,D)

Richard Wainscoat is an astronomer at the University of Hawaii. He grew up in Australia, studying physics at the University of Western Australia, then receiving his PhD in astronomy from the Australian National University. He was attracted to Hawaii by the excellent observatory sites on Mauna Kea and Haleakala, and the powerful telescopes that are located atop those mountains. He began his career by studying the structure of galaxies, then later switched fields to study Near-Earth Objects. Near-Earth Objects are asteroids and comets that come relatively close to Earth. Impacts from larger objects will have catastrophic consequences to life on Earth, so worldwide efforts are now being made to find any objects that may hit Earth in the future so that they can be deflected. He now leads the Near-Earth Object search program with the Pan-STARRS telescopes on Haleakala. Pan-STARRS is presently the leading discoverer of Near-Earth Objects, and also discovers more than half of all new comets. He is also a photographer and an astrophotographer.
Richard will be joining the Saturn group.
