Solar Eclipse Over Spain: Madrid and Old Castile
7 days from $7,195
Join us in Spain’s Ribera del Duero wine country in August 2026 to witness the next total solar eclipse! Beginning in Madrid, experience the region through the lens of astronomy, visiting the historic towns of Segovia, Ávila, and Valladolid. Then head to a winery in the hills of the beautiful Ribera del Duero region and toast the eclipse with wine tasting, live music, and a memorable meal. Use the Dates & Prices tab below to find expert assignments or upgrade your experience with a winery stay.
Highlights
Choose between two itineraries that visit the same destinations in a slightly different order: spend two nights in Valladolid or enhance your experience with a two-night stay at the winery and an upgraded hotel in Madrid.
- Exclusive Eclipse Viewing: Witness the solar eclipse from within the path of totality during a private party at the Torremilanos wine estate in the lovely Ribera del Duero wine region. Visit the winery and enjoy a wine tasting, attend talks by astronomy experts, then toast the eclipse with live music and a festive dinner. *Note that visibility of the eclipse depends on weather conditions and cannot be guaranteed.
- Winery Stay: Instead of staying in Valladolid, upgrade your eclipse experience with a two-night stay at the Torremilanos wine estate. Enjoy yoga, vineyard walks, wine tasting, a film screening, and a stargazing party on the lovely property. See the “Madrid and the Winery Country of Old Castile” itinerary below for details.
- Madrid: Experience the legendary Prado museum from a unique perspective on an astronomy-themed tour of the museum’s vast art collection. Then tour Madrid’s Royal Observatory with an astronomer.
- Valladolid: Explore Valladolid, a royal city during the medieval era, and preview the eclipse during an exclusive planetarium show at the Valladolid Science Museum.
- Segovia and Ávila: Visit two World Heritage sites: in Segovia’s Old Town, venture into a fairy-tale castle and encounter the Roman aqueduct; and take a walking tour of the the fortified medieval city of Ávila.
- Cuisine: Savor delightful tapas and meals that showcase a variety of Spanish culinary traditions.

Madrid and Old Castile (Groups Venus, Neptune, & Saturn)
Days 1-2 — U.S./Madrid, Spain
Depart on an overnight flight to Madrid and transfer to your hotel upon arrival. Get acquainted with the city on a short orientation tour along the Paseo del Prado to the lovely Plaza de Cibeles. Gather for a welcome reception and dinner. (R,D)
Day 3 — Madrid
After breakfast, head to the Prado for a specially curated astronomy tour that traces our evolving understanding of the universe as reflected in works in the museum’s vast art collection. Later, join an astronomer for a private visit to the Royal Observatory of Madrid, home to Spain’s National Astronomical Observatory and Central Geophysical Observatory. Here, you’ll see the Foucault Pendulum, used in 1851 to prove the daily rotation of the Earth, as well as a 25-foot telescope and an expansive collection of astronomy, geodesy, and geophysics instruments. Sit down to a traditional tapas lunch at a local restaurant. The remainder of the day is yours to explore Madrid. Consider a walk along the Gran Via or a visit to the Reina Sofia Museum to see works by Picasso and Dali. (B,L)
Day 4 — Segovia and Valladolid
Travel northwest to Segovia, perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Castilian countryside. In the World Heritage-listed Old Town, visit the iconic Roman aqueduct and the Alcázar, a castle that was once the home of King Alfonso the Wise, considered a patron of astronomy for his work developing tables to calculate the position of the stars. Enjoy free time for lunch before continuing to the elegant city of Valladolid. Visit the planetarium at the Valladolid Science Museum to experience an exclusive simulation of the eclipse. If you wish, travel into the countryside to take part in a star party under the new moon after dinner tonight. (B,D)
