Days 1–2 — Depart U.S. for Rabat, Morocco
Depart on an overnight flight to Morocco and arrive in the seaside capital city of Rabat. Meet your fellow travelers and trip staff at a welcome dinner together at our hotel. (D)
Day 3 — Rabat
Set out to discover Rabat, one of Morocco’s four ancient imperial cities. Begin at Chellah, a medieval Islamic necropolis built atop the ruins of a busy Roman trading port. Left to the passage of time, the evocative site now hosts a colony of storks said to bring good luck. Next, uncover layers of history at the Museum of Archaeology, which showcases artifacts from prehistoric times to the present day. A local family welcomes you into their home for a lunch of Moroccan specialties. See some of the city’s main sites this afternoon, including the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the king who oversaw Morocco’s independence in the mid-20th century, and Hassan Tower. Then delve into 12th-century lanes of the Kasbah of the Oudaias, a World Heritage-listed neighborhood perched above the mouth of the Bou Regreg River. (B,L,D)
Day 4 — Volubilis and Meknes/Fez
Travel east toward Fez, stopping for lunch and a visit to the ancient Roman city of Volubilis, declared a World Heritage site for its exceptional state of preservation. An outpost on the southwestern frontier of Rome’s empire, Volubilis was abandoned nearly a millennium ago, and still boasts beautiful mosaics, arches, and colonnades. Continue to the old city of Meknes, another imperial capital, and see its monumental Bab Mansour gate. Late this afternoon, arrive in Fez, which became Morocco’s first imperial capital in the eighth century. Check in at your hotel overlooking the old city and enjoy an evening at leisure. (B,L)
Day 5 — Fez
Delve into the labyrinthine medina of Fez, where time seems to have stood still. Here, artisans ply their age-old trades and the spectacular architecture of historic schools and religious sites reveals itself behind unassuming adobe walls. Make your way through the narrow lanes of the souk to the Al-Attarine Madrassa, where a small courtyard showcases intricate stucco and zellij tilework dating back to the early 1300s. Visit artisans’ quarters and historic Koranic schools; see Al Karaouine, a medieval theological university. Enjoy lunch in the courtyard of a traditional riad inn, then tour the Mellah, or Jewish quarter, and its 17th-century synagogue. Stop for a traditional mint tea in a family home. (B,L,D)
Day 6 — Casablanca/Marrakech
Journey to Marrakech by way of Casablanca, where you’ll stop in the late morning for a tour of the colossal Hassan II Mosque—one of the only mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims may enter. Finished in 1993, the mosque marries Moroccan artistry with modern technology and can accommodate 25,000 worshipers. Its minaret is the second tallest in the world, soaring to some 700 feet above the shores of the Atlantic. After lunch in Casablanca, turn south toward Marrakech, arriving in time for dinner on your own. (B,L)
Day 7 — Marrakech
Experience the enchantment of Marrakech during a full day of exploration. Begin with a horse-drawn carriage ride along the city’s earthen walls, and venture into several sections of the buzzing medina. Visit the Dar El Basha, a sumptuous palace that exemplifies riad architecture and now houses a small museum. After lunch at the hotel, stroll through the Jardin Majorelle, an oasis of rare botanical species set off by a stunning cobalt-blue villa, once the home of Yves Saint Laurent. Browse a museum dedicated to the designer’s haute couture and design works, and view traditional clothing and jewelry at the Berber Museum. End the day at Djemaa el Fna Square, the heart and soul of Marrakech, where local families come to eat and mingle amid a colorful swirl of snake charmers, acrobats, storytellers, and entertainers. (B,L,D)
Day 8 — Marrakech
Dive into local culture in the souks this morning, soaking up timeless sights and sounds and interacting with local artisans. Meet yarn dyers and iron workers, herbalists and wood carvers, painters and lantern makers, all using tools and methods passed down through the generations. Take advantage of a free afternoon to have lunch and experience Marrakech as you wish. Celebrate your Moroccan sojourn at a farewell dinner tonight. (B,D)
Day 9 — Return home
Early this morning, depart for the Marrakech airport for your flight home. (B)

Iman is a landscape archaeologist, field researcher, and cultural surveyor with more than 15 years of experience in North Africa, the broader Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia. In her earlier career she focused on settlement archaeology and religious landscapes, working on projects in Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. As her research led her to investigate the movement of ideology and material culture across vast distances, she turned her focus to the prehistoric Sahara in Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria, studying rock inscriptions and landscape configuration.
More recently, her archaeological work has incorporated coastal landscapes including the Canary and Madeira islands, where she has explored connections to the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa that date back 10,000 years.
Now based at the University of California, Los Angeles, Iman continues to follow her passion for the spectacular landscapes of the prehistoric world, working at sites ranging from the early neolithic to contemporary periods. Her research has been shared widely in international conferences. Iman takes great pleasure in demystifying archaeology, sharing her unique insights from the field, and shedding light on connections between cultures of the deep past.
