Exploring Bahia Magdalena and Guerrero Negro in small, local boats, you may have the chance to interact with these gentle giants that often seek out human contact. The whale-watching continues on the Sea of Cortez, where you’ll look for humpbacks, orcas, and blue whales—the planet’s largest living creature.

Day 1 – Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Arrive in Cabo San Lucas, and settle into your stateroom aboard the ship. Take in views of Cabo’s famous rock arches as the ship rounds Land’s End and heads toward the Pacific coast. (D)
Day 2 – At Sea
During a leisurely day at sea, get acquainted with the ship and your fellow travelers as you sail along Baja’s western coast. Attend talks by your Smithsonian Journeys Experts and relax on the sundeck to take in the views. (B,L,D)
Day 3 – Bahia Tortugas
From the town of Bahia Tortugas, travel to Guerrero Negro for a whale watching excursion in a remote lagoon protected by sand dunes. Weighing about 40 tons, Pacific gray whales migrate some 12,000 miles from the Arctic every winter, arriving by the thousands to calve in the salty lagoons along Baja’s western coast. Board a small local boat for a chance to observe these majestic creatures up close. Gray whales are naturally curious, and sometimes seek out interaction with humans. (B,L,D)
Day 4 – At Sea
As the ship turns south, you’ll have another relaxing day on board to take advantage of the ship’s amenities. You might indulge in a spa treatment or meet with new friends for lunch alfresco or an afternoon cappuccino. Your Smithsonian Journeys Experts will share their insights, and there may be opportunities for wildlife-watching with naturalists on deck. (B,L,D)
Day 5 – Bahia Magdalena
This morning finds you in Bahia Magdalena, a nutrient-rich bay fringed with mangroves and dunes that is renowned for its high concentration of cetaceans. Look for gray whales as well as humpbacks and dolphins on a whale-watching tour, and seek out seabird species such as pelicans, magnificent frigatebirds, and albatrosses on Bird Island. Then set out to explore the dunes on a gentle walk or an invigorating hike. (B,L,D)
Day 6 – Cabo Pulmo
Your first destination in the Sea of Cortez is Cabo Pulmo, a marine sanctuary whose diverse reefs inspired Jacques Cousteau to call it “the aquarium of the world.” Enjoy more whale-watching, searching for humpbacks, orcas, and mobula rays. Or snorkel the coral reefs amid shimmering schools of jacks, brightly colored tropical fish, and possibly sea turtles—five species can be found in these waters. Certified divers will also have the chance to scuba dive (at additional cost). (B,L,D)
Day 7 – Loreto Bay National Park
Loreto Bay National Park is known for its dramatic sea cliffs, volcanic peaks, and underwater canyons as well as stunning beaches. On a morning excursion by local boat, watch for humpbacks, dolphins, and blue whales—the planet’s largest animal, averaging nearly 100 feet in length and some 130 tons. Learn about the region’s terrestrial flora and fauna on an afternoon walk with a naturalist. Later, tour the fishing town of Loreto, the first Spanish mission in the Californias. With the ship docked here overnight, you’ll have the opportunity to explore this charming port on your own. (B,L,D)
Day 8 – Isla Coronado
Among the islands that dot Loreto Bay is Isla Coronado, a stratovolcano surrounded by secluded beaches. Unspoiled by development, the island harbors a California sea lion colony and the surrounding waters are rich with marine life. Enjoy a thrilling opportunity to snorkel with sea lions, witnessing their playful and acrobatic underwater antics up close. Certified divers may instead choose to dive (at additional cost). Take the afternoon to swim and relax on the beach, or set off with a naturalist on a bird walk or a hike to the volcano’s summit. (B,L,D)
Day 9 – Los Islotes and Pichilingue
Set out for Los Islotes, tiny islets in the spectacular Espiritu Santo archipelago that are home to a sea lion rookery. Here, immerse yourself in Baja’s extraordinary marine world, with options to swim, snorkel or dive (at extra cost) in these calm waters. With the rookery nearby, you’ll swim with curious sea lions, and you may catch sight of blue- or brown-footed boobies diving for fish. The surrounding reefs—as well as dramatic underwater terrain of caves and ravines—harbor all manner of marine species, from parrotfish to rays and sea turtles. Sail on to the port of Pichilingue this evening. (B,L,D)
Day 10 – Pichilingue and La Paz
Just up the coast from Pichilingue lies Balandra Beach, one of Baja’s most beautiful beaches. You'll have free time here to swim and take walks or hikes with naturalists, enjoying views of aquamarine waters and the rugged coast. Shuttles to La Paz will be available for those who wish to explore its historic center or stroll the seaside malecón. (B,L,D)
Day 11 – Cabo San Lucas
Disembark in Cabo San Lucas and transfer to the airport for your onward flight. (B)
Included meals are denoted as follows: Breakfast (B), Lunch (L), Reception (R), Dinner (D)

The Spirit of Baja: Todos Santos — 3 days, 2 nights
The itinerary below applies to the current year and serves as a sample for future voyages. Extension details for future departures will be posted as soon as they are available, and all booked travelers will be notified via email.
This three-day program, based in the laid-back coastal town of Todos Santos, is an opportunity to experience a less frenetic side of Baja California than is typical of Cabo San Lucas—a place that blends desert landscapes, beaches, and colonial charm. Founded as a mission settlement in 1724, Todos Santos became wealthy during the sugarcane boom of the 19th century and today is a haven for artists, where cobblestone streets are lined with galleries, boutiques, and farm-to-table restaurants showcasing local produce and seafood.
Day 1 — Los Cabos | Todos Santos
Arrive at Los Cabos International Airport, where you will be met and transferred to the Kimpton Mas Olas Resort and Spa, located about 35 miles north of Cabo San Lucas on Baja's Pacific coast. After check-in, relax or explore the resort's grounds until the evening, when you gather with fellow travelers for a welcome reception. Dinner is at your leisure and independent.
Kimpton Mas Olas Resort and Spa
Day 2 — Todos Santos
After breakfast at the hotel, drive into the center of Todos Santos for a guided tour of the town. Wander cobblestone streets lined with beautifully preserved historic homes and haciendas, each with a story to tell. Step inside the private studios of working artists whose inspiration flows from desert landscapes, nearby beaches like Playa Los Cerritos, and the town’s colonial past. Time is set aside for shopping, allowing you to explore galleries, artisan boutiques, and local design spaces at your own pace—perhaps discovering something to carry home with you as a memento of this special place.
At midday, sit down to a three-course, farm-to-table lunch at a local restaurant. Savor seasonal ingredients harvested from nearby fields and prepared with Baja flair—fresh, vibrant, and beautifully plated. Later in the afternoon, return to your hotel, where the balance of the day is at leisure. Dinner is independent this evening.
Kimpton Mas Olas Resort and Spa

Indulge yourself at the Botánica Spa, offering plant-based treatments, hydrotherapy, and meditation. Work out in a state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor gym with HIIT and strength training zones. Or spend time at one of the resort's four pools, including a 25-meter lap pool set amid the hotel's lush gardens.

Post-Cruise Ext.: Mexico City
Mexico City: Sun Pyramids & Painted Dreams — 4 days, 3 nights
The itinerary below applies to the current year and serves as a sample for future voyages. Extension details for future departures will be posted as soon as they are available, and all booked travelers will be notified via email.
Mexico City is one of the world's great capitals, and also, at 7,350 feet above sea level, one of the highest. It is vast and exceedingly diverse, combining ancient civilizations—it is built atop the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan—with the skyscrapers and busy avenues of a modern cosmopolitan metropolis. This post-cruise program is designed to introduce you to some of the major highlights of the city during excursions from your base of operations in the 5-star St. Regis hotel.
Day 1 — Cabo San Lucas | Disembark | Mexico City
After breakfast aboard, disembark and transfer to Los Cabos International Airport for you group flight to Mexico City. On arrival at the Mexico City Airport, you will be met and transferred to the St. Regis Mexico City, your home for the next three nights. The balance of the day is at leisure. Dinner is independent.
Day 2 — Mexico City
Breakfast this morning is followed by a visit to San Ángel and Coyoacán, quiet neighborhoods of cobblestone streets and colonial mansions in the southern part of Mexico City that feel more like small villages than parts of a huge metropolis. Established in the 17th-century as retreats for the wealthy, during the 20th century they became a haven for artists and intellectuals. Today they remain known for their galleries, boutiques, and museums.
As you follow your guide on a walk in the footsteps of some of Mexico's most celebrated artists, step into Casa Azul, the cobalt-blue home in Coyoacán where Frida Kahlo lived and worked for most of her life. The house is preserved much as it was in the mid-20th century. In San Ángel, explore Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, a modernist architectural landmark that served as both home and studio for Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera, one of Mexico's most famous muralists.
Following your time in San Ángel and Coyoacán, which includes lunch at a local restaurant, return to your hotel where the balance of the day is at leisure and dinner is independent.
Day 3 — Mexico City
After breakfast, travel about an hour north of the city to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Teotihuacán, a vast pre-Columbian metropolis that once was home to as many as 150,000 inhabitants and remains one of the most important archaeological sites in the Americas. As you walk along the Avenue of the Dead, Teotihuacán’s central axis, your expert guide will tell the story of the civilization that thrived here centuries before the Aztecs and describe the profound influence of its art, architecture and religion on later Mesoamerican cultures. See the towering Pyramid of the Sun, one of the largest pyramids in the world, and the equally impressive Pyramid of the Moon. In the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, admire the intricate carvings depicting the god as a feathered serpent with power over wind, light, and wisdom.
Back in Mexico City, pause for a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant before joining a guided tour of the city's historic center—the Zócalo. Here you will see buildings that span the centuries from pre-Columbian times, through the colonial period, to the present day. Admire the chapels and ornate gold altars inside the Metropolitan Cathedral, get a glimpse of Aztec cosmology at the Templo Mayor, and hear about the historical significance of the National Palace, and stroll along the busy Avenida Francisco Madero, where one highlight is sure to be the striking Art Nouveau facade of the Palace of Fine Art´s (Bellas Artes). When you return to your hotel, the evening is at leisure and dinner is independent.
