A Golden Hour Solar Eclipse in the Spanish Vineyards

Picture the scene: You’re at a lovely winery in northern Spain tasting the local vintages and exploring the vineyards with new friends. It is August in Spain, so naturally, the sun takes its time setting, drawing out the golden afternoon light long into the evening.

The vineyards of the Spain's Ribera del Duero wine region, located about two hours north of Madrid, are known for their excellent Verdejo and Tempranillo wines.

Gradually, the already magical atmosphere takes on a surreal quality. And then the lights go out. It’s the moment you’ve come for, even though you’ve already seen and done so much in Spain: For a few moments, the total solar eclipse has replaced the golden hour with an eerie darkness. A hush falls over the vineyards, the air is suddenly cooler, and spectacular wisps of the solar corona flicker and spark around the moon. When the moon moves away minutes later, the sun is plump and low in the sky. Sunset is your encore, along with a memorable meal and delicious wines.

A total solar eclipse is a rare and wondrous phenomenon, and over the years, Smithsonian Journeys has staked out a prime spot in the band of totality—whether in Texas Hill Country, Patagonia, or the Coral Sea. We invite astronomers and other experts who interpret the science and mythology behind eclipses, and build an engaging travel program around the event so that our travelers can complement the cosmic display with an exploration of the history and culture of the region.

This summer’s eclipse sweeps down from the Arctic on August 12, 2026, staying over the Atlantic until it crosses northern Spain, where it will reach totality at approximately 8:30 pm. In its path lie myriad World Heritage sites, cities rich in history and architecture, and endless vineyards—and we have two extraordinary trips planned to celebrate all of the above. Our eclipse trips are always among our most popular Smithsonian Journeys. For a lucky few, we have a handful of additional spaces available on this summer's trips.

If a trip to Spain isn’t in the stars this summer, the cosmos have aligned to offer solar eclipses in 2027 and 2028 as well. Visit our Special Interest page to find out how to experience them by land or sea with Smithsonian Journeys.

Please note: We can orchestrate an unforgettable event, but we can’t control the sky: eclipse viewing conditions are dependent on the weather.
