The Museum of Glass, located in Tacoma, WA, opened to worldwide acclaim in 2002. The idea came ten years earlier, from Phil Phibbs (a retired university president) and Dale Chihuly (see above). Phibbs thought Tacoma was a natural location for such a museum as many local artists had greatly influenced modern art glass. The museum includes an amphitheater where visitors can watch art glass being made; a hands-on glass-making studio; and ever-changing exhibitions by local, national, and international glass artists.
