Sep 5-14, 2026: London to Lisbon

Day 1 — Arrive London

Arrive in London early this morning and transfer to the ship this afternoon before setting sail for France. (D)

Day 2 — Cruising the English Channel

Enjoy a day at sea as Le Champlain plies the English Channel toward France. Hear engaging lectures by our experts, opt for a visit to the sauna or a massage, or find a comfortable spot to read or take in the views as we pass between the shores of England and France. (B,L,D)

Day 3 — Caen for Normandy Beaches

Located in the heart of Normandy, Caen was built by William the Conqueror with considerable help from his wife, Queen Mathilde of Flanders. Choose to delve into the city’s medieval history—and the legacy of William and Mathilde—on a guided tour that includes the Women's Abbey and its 11th-century Church of the Holy Trinity, and Caen Castle, one of the largest walled fortifications in Europe. Damaged during the bombings of 1944, the Castle has since been restored and its extensive walls and towers are truly impressive. Take a walk on the castle ramparts for a view of the town, and visit the Men's Abbey to see St. Stephen’s Church, an architectural masterpiece that blends simple Norman style with Gothic intricacy. Or set out on an excursion to the Normandy beaches, where Allied soldiers made their dramatic landing on D-Day. Contemplate thousands of solemn crosses and Stars of David in the American Military Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer and look out over the serene sands of Omaha Beach. (B,L,D)

Day 4 — Saint-Malo, France, for Mont St. Michel

Our next port of call in France is the walled city of Saint-Malo. Choose to spend the day discovering this seafaring city’s dramatic history, from its Celtic roots to its days as a base for privateers. On a walking tour of the walled city view the castle and ramparts, the house of Duchess Ann, and the cathedral where explorer Jacques Cartier is buried. Visit the 18th-century home of the powerful director of the French East Indies Company, now a French Historic Monument and hotel. Then enjoy a tasting of the cider for which the region is renowned. Alternatively, take an excursion to the World Heritage site of Mont St. Michel, a fortified abbey perched on a tidal island. A pilgrimage site since the early 8th century, this tiny village began as a humble oratory and grew into an influential Benedictine monastery. Experience its extraordinary cloisters, refectory, stained-glass windows and visit the Abbaye du Mont-St-Michel, a three-story Gothic masterpiece. (B,L,D)

Day 5 — Cruising the French Coast

Enjoy a day to relax at sea as we follow the coast of France south to Spain. Take advantage of the ship’s superb amenities, opting for a treatment in the spa or a work out at the fitness center. If weather permits, go for a swim in the pool or read a book on the sundeck. Our Smithsonian Journeys Experts will present lectures on the region. Visit the ship’s upper deck to take in views of the open sea and perhaps spot seabirds or marine species. (B,L,D)

Day 6 — Bilbao

Arrive in Bilbao and set off on a tour of this dynamic metropolis, where the traditions of the past live side by side with futuristic buildings of world renown. Visit the remarkable Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, an iconic creation of titanium, granite, and glass designed by Frank Gehry. An expert guide will lead you through the contemporary art collection. Or take a stroll through the narrow streets of the old city, where handsome Renaissance and baroque buildings coexist with modernist architecture. Highlights include the Gothic Cathedral of Santiago and the elegant Plaza Nueva, with its distinctive porticoes. (B,L,D)

Day 7 — A Coruña

A Coruña, on Spain's northwest coast, is a major shipping port with a long maritime history, tracing back at least as far as the Phoenicians. The Tower of Hercules, built by Emperor Trajan, is a UNESCO World Heritage site—the only Roman lighthouse still in use. More recently, the city played important roles in the launch of the Spanish Armada in 1588, and in the Napoleonic Wars on the Iberian Peninsula in the early 19th-century. (B,L,D)

Day 8 — Vigo for Santiago de Compostela

Travel into the region’s World Heritage-listed capital, Santiago de Compostela. Here, medieval pedestrian streets lead to the expansive Praza del Obradoiro and the grand Romanesque cathedral, a pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages said to enshrine the tomb of St. James. Take a walking tour of the city center including the town hall and the Palace of Saint Jerome. You’ll have free time to venture into the cathedral to see its distinctive medieval and baroque architectural elements. Gather for lunch at the stunning Hostal de Los Reyes Catolicos, commissioned by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1501 to welcome pilgrims. (B,L,D)

Day 9 — Porto

Dock in Leixões and transfer to nearby Porto, a former Roman outpost and the center of the port wine trade since the 17th century. Set on the steep banks of the Douro River, this World Heritage-listed city showcases artistic and architectural treasures derived from the civilizations that have occupied it—from the Romans and the Visigoths to the Moors and the Christians. Discover alluring Porto on your choice of two excursions. Visit the 12th-century cathedral and see stunning azulejos—Portugal’s traditional painted tiles—in the cloister. Stroll through the historic Ribeira district along the river, and take in expansive views from the platform of the Dom Luis I Bridge, designed by a disciple of Gustav Eiffel. Continue to a port lodge to learn about the history, manufacture, and consumption of Porto’s famous fortified wine, and sample several varieties. Alternatively, delve deeper into some of the city’s architectural gems on a tour of the ornate Church of São Francisco and enjoy time on your own to meander through the lovely Ribeira district. Later admire Porto from the water on a boat ride on the Douro River. (B,L,D)

Day 10 — Lisbon, Portugal

Arrive in Lisbon, a city on seven hills located at the mouth of the Tagus River. Disembark the ship and extend your stay or transfer to the airport for your flight home. (B)

Included meals are denoted as follows: Breakfast (B), Lunch (L), Reception (R), Dinner (D)

Optional Extensions

Pre-Cruise Ext.: London (2026)

London & the Royal Borough of Greenwich - 2 days, 1 night

September 4 – 5, 2026

In 2012, the London suburb of Greenwich, which was already a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was chartered as a Royal Borough by the Queen in recognition of the town's historically close association with the Crown, especially under the Tudors and Stuarts, and to acknowledge Greenwich's contributions to British maritime history and to the development of the science of navigation.

Day 1 – London

Arrive at your London area airport, where you will be met and transferred to The Great Scotland Yard Hotel in the center of the city, your home for the night. A local representative will be present at the hospitality desk in the afternoon to welcome you and answer any questions you may have. Relax and unwind at the hotel, or explore some of the sites that are just steps away from the front door. This evening, join fellow travelers for a welcome cocktail reception. Dinner is independent.

The Great Scotland Yard Hotel

Day 2 – London | Embark

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, meet your guide for the short drive to Greenwich, where your exploration of the Royal Borough begins at the Royal Observatory. Designed by Christopher Wren, who began his career as an astronomer, the Observatory is probably best known as the marker of the Prime Meridian—the line that divides East from West (longitude 0° 0’ 0”). It is also one of the most important centers of navigational research in the world, serving as the original home of the clocks that maintain Greenwich Mean Time and the site of the only planetarium in London. You will be free to explore the galleries here on your own before rejoining your guide to walk through Greenwich Park to the National Maritime Museum.

First opened in 1937, the Museum’s extensive collections include boats and naval memorabilia, relics, maps, charts, and uniforms, all of which contribute to telling the story of Britain’s history as a seafaring nation. But the multitude and variety of the museum's exhibits reach far beyond the exploits of a single nation to portray the long and diverse history of mankind’s association with the sea.

Lunch will be served at a local restaurant, followed by time at leisure to explore lower Greenwich at your own pace. You may browse the stores and boutiques in and around Greenwich Market, perhaps visit the Cutty Sark, once the fastest ship in the world and the sole surviving tea clipper in the world, or stroll through the Old Royal Naval College—the architectural centerpiece of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In mid-afternoon, transfer to the Tower Pier to embark your ship, which remains docked overnight.

Your hotel:

Part of the Hyatt Unbound Collection, The Great Scotland Yard Hotel is a five-star luxury property located in historic Westminster, just off Trafalgar Square and within easy walking distance of Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, and other places of interest. Post-Cruise Ext.: Lisbon (2026)

Historic Lisbon - 3 days, 2 nights

September 14 – 16, 2026

Portugal is most often introduced to students of history as the country that led the way in Europe's discovery of sub-Saharan Africa, India, and East Asia. But throughout much of the modern era, Portugal, like the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, was in the avant garde of developments in the fields of art and architecture. This specially designed program will introduce you to monuments that celebrate both of these aspects of Portugal's past.

Day 1 - Lisbon | Embark

After breakfast on board, disembark your ship. Your panoramic tour of Lisbon begins with a stop at the imposing Jeronimos Monastery, where Vasco da Gama spent his last night before embarking on his voyage to India, and the fin est extant example of the Portuguese architectural style known as Manueline. Enjoy some time at leisure in the historic Belém Quarter. Stop for photos at the 16th-century Belém Tower, the point from which many Portuguese explorers, including da Gama, set sail. Continue to the Gulbenkian Museum, home to one of the world’s most impressive private art collections, featuring works from ancient Egypt to 20th-century Europe. Enjoy a local lunch then transfer to the Hotel Altis Avenida for check-in. The remainder of the day is at leisure, and dinner is on your own.

Explore Sintra Palace, thought to have first been constructed in the 10th or 11th century when Sintra was under Moorish rule, with additions made by successive kings and queens. Since March 2025, ongoing restoration of the magnificent Hispano‑Moorish tile panels in the Arab Room, D. Afonso VI Chamber, and the Gruta dos Banhos has been underway, allowing visitors to view the intricate conservation efforts in progress. The Preta Garden, fully restored in recent years, continues to offer sweeping views over the Sintra Hills and historic town center.

After your visit to this fascinating place, drive to the center of Sintra for lunch at a local restaurant and time at leisure for browsing the many shops that offer handicrafts and Portuguese wines before reboarding your motorcoach for the return journey. Your route will take you through a nature preserve to Cabo da Roca on the Atlantic coast, the westernmost point of Europe. From there you will travel along the coastal road back to Lisbon. Stephen also received grants from the Hewlett and Keck foundations to investigate how technology can open up new avenues for understanding the architecture of the distant past. This culminated in his work with a team from the University of Melbourne in Australia on an interactive tool entitled “Virtual Chartres Cathedral.” As a visiting fellow at the Australia National University in Canberra, he focused on interactions between Muslims, Jews, and Christians in the Mediterranean basin during the Middle Ages.

The academic pursuit he has enjoyed above all others is teaching and sharing his knowledge of art and architecture. A popular Smithsonian Journeys Expert, he has led more than 20 tours and cruises through the Mediterranean region and northern Europe.

Ghosts of Spain: Travels Through Spain and Its Silent Past
By: Giles Tremlett
“Part modern social history, part travelogue, Ghosts of Spain is held together by elegant first-person prose…an invaluable book…[that] has become something of a bible for those of us extranjeros who have chosen to live in Spain. A country finally facing its past could scarcely hope for a better, or more enamored, chronicler of its present.”—Sarah Wildman, New York Times Book Review The appearance, more than sixty years after the Spanish Civil War ended, of mass graves containing victims of Francisco Franco’s death squads finally broke what Spaniards call “the pact of forgetting”—the unwritten understanding that their recent, painful past was best left unexplored. At this charged moment, Giles Tremlett embarked on a journey around the country and through its history to discover why some of Europe’s most voluble people have kept silent so long. In elegant and passionate prose, Tremlett unveils the tinderbox of disagreements that mark the country today. Ghosts of Spain is a revelatory book about one of Europe’s most exciting countries.

The Basque History of the World: The Story of a Nation
By: Mark Kurlansky
From Mark Kurlansky, the bestselling author of Cod, Salt, Birdseye, and Paper—the illuminating story of an ancient and enigmatic peopleStraddling a small corner of Spain and France in a land that is marked on no maps except their own, the Basques are a puzzling contradiction—they are Europe's oldest nation without ever having been a country. No one has ever been able to determine their origins, and even the Basques' language, Euskera—the most ancient in Europe—is related to none other on earth. For centuries, their influence has been felt in nearly every realm, from religion to sports to commerce. Even today, the Basques are enjoying what may be the most important cultural renaissance in their long existence, as displayed by new cookbooks like chefs Alexandra Raij and Eder Montero's The Basque Book and restaurateur Jose Pizarro’s Basque.Mark Kurlansky's passion for the Basque people and his exuberant eye for detail shine throughout this fascinating book. Like Cod, The Basque History of the World, blends human stories with economic, political, literary, and culinary history into a rich and heroic tale.Among the Basques' greatest accomplishments:   • Exploration—the first man to circumnavigate the globe, Juan Sebastian de Elcano, was a Basque and the Basques were the second Europeans, after the Vikings, in North America    • Gastronomy and agriculture—they were the first Europeans to eat corn and chili peppers and cultivate tobacco, and were among the first to use chocolate    • Religion—Ignatius Loyola, a Basque, founded the Jesuit religious order    • Business and politics—they introduced capitalism and modern commercial banking to southern Europe    • Recreation—they invented beach resorts, jai alai, and racing regattas, and were the first Europeans to play sports with balls “A delectable portrait of an uncanny, indomitable nation.” –Newsday“Exciting, Illuminating, and thought provoking.” –The Boston GlobeEntertaining and instructive… [Kurlansky’s] approach is unorthodox, mixing history with anecdotes, poems with recipes.” –The New York Times Book Review

Journey to Portugal: In Pursuit of Portugal's History and Culture
By: José Saramago
When José Saramago decided to write a book about Portugal, his only desire was that it be unlike all other books on the subject, and in this he has certainly succeeded. Recording the events and observations of a journey across the length and breadth of the country he loves dearly, Saramago brings Portugal to life as only a writer of his brilliance can. Forfeiting the usual sources such as tourist guides and road maps, he scours the country with the eyes and ears of an observer fascinated by the ancient myths and history of his people. Whether it be an inaccessible medieval fortress set on a cliff, a wayside chapel thick with cobwebs, or a grand mansion in the city, the extraordinary places of this land come alive.Always meticulously attentive to those elements of ancient Portugal that persist today, he examines the country in its current period of rapid transition and growth. Journey to Portugal is an ode to a country and its rich traditions.

All the Light We Cannot See: A Novel
By: Anthony Doerr
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, a New York Times Book Review Top Ten Book, National Book Award finalist, more than two and a half years on the New York Times bestseller listFrom the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the stunningly beautiful instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure lives in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where her father works. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Ten years in the writing, a National Book Award finalist, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).
The Maias
By: José Maria de Eça de Queirós
Set in Lisbon at the close of the nineteenth century, The Maias is both a coming-of-age novel and a passionate romance. Our hero Carlos Maia, heir to one of the greatest fortunes in Portugal, is rich, handsome, generous and intelligent: he means to do something for his country, something useful, something that will make his beloved grandfather proud. However, Carlos is also a bit of a dilettante. He drifts along, becoming a doctor and pottering about in his laboratory, but spends more and more time riding his splendid horses or visiting the theater, having affairs or reading novels. His best friend and chief partner in crime, Ega, is likewise engaged in a long summertime of witticisms and pleasure. Carlos however is set on a dead reckoning course with fate―with the love of his life and with a terrible, terrible secret... Newly translated by the acclaimed translator Margaret Jull Costa (translator of José Saramago's Blindness), New Directions is proud to bring Eça de Queirós' brilliant prose to life for American readers for the first time.
