Sarah Wilkins
Art Historian
Dr. Sarah Wilkins is a historian of medieval and Renaissance art who has been an avid traveler since her first trip to Europe at age five. Fascinated by the arts and material culture, she earned an undergraduate degree in anthropology (archaeology), before pursuing her PhD in art history. Sarah is a tenured adjunct associate professor at Pratt Institute, where she teaches courses ranging from introductory surveys for students with no art history background to upper-level courses on medieval and Renaissance art, to a graduate seminar on relics and reliquaries. Sarah also wrote and teaches a graduate seminar on women in the Renaissance for Johns Hopkins’ Master of Liberal Arts program.
Sarah’s research centers on 14th-century Italy (known as the trecento), a pivotal moment between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. She has published extensively on representations of Mary Magdalen throughout the Italian peninsula, was co-editor of Art and Experience in Trecento Italy and is series editor for Trecento Forum, published by Brepols. From 2021 to 2023, Sarah served as president of the Italian Art Society, a scholarly society dedicated to the study of Italian art from antiquity through today.
When not thinking, writing, or teaching about art history, Sarah enjoys good food and wine, crochet, ballet, cozy murder mysteries, soccer and, last but never least, cats.
