Piyawit Moonkham

Archaeological Anthropologist

Piyawit Moonkham is an anthropological archaeologist with broad research interests who studies how civilizations in the past lived, interacted with their environment, and created communities. His work focuses on Southeast Asia and his native Thailand, as well as the American Southwest.  Piyawit uses spatial analysis—mapping and examining how places were organized—to understand community spaces such as temples, gathering areas, and political or social centers. He also studies sociopolitical interactions, pre-and post-colonial ideologies, and the management of cultural heritage sites. He is developing a theoretical approach that integrates archaeological and cultural theories to understand patterns in humans’ relationship to objects and the landscape. An avid traveler, Piyawit enjoys visiting temple fairs and festivals in his spare time.
