Monty Kalyahe
Wildlife Biologist
Montan “Monty” Kalyahe is a Tanzanian wildlife biologist with more than 17 years of experience in the study and conservation of Africa’s large carnivores, particularly lions and African wild dogs. He has worked across many of Tanzania’s key ecosystems, including national parks such as Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Ruaha, as well as coastal landscapes. He currently leads the Saadani Lion Project in Saadani National Park—Tanzania’s only national park located along the Indian Ocean—where his work focuses on lion ecology and promoting coexistence between lions and local communities.
In addition to his carnivore research, Monty is an expert on the birds of Africa and frequently leads specialized bird-watching tours. He is also a skilled botanist with strong expertise in plant identification. His work integrates field research, practical conservation, and public engagement, bringing firsthand insights from the field to a wide range of audiences.
