Isabelle McMartin

Geologist

Dr. Isabelle McMartin is an emeritus scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario, where she devoted her career to studying the history of recent glaciations. For more than 35 years, Isabelle has mapped glaciated landscapes across the Precambrian Shield of central Canada and Arctic regions of Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and northern Quebec. Since 2016, she also serves as an adjunct professor at Université Laval in Québec City. Throughout her career, Isabelle has authored numerous scientific papers and public reports on ice-sheet dynamics, sea-level histories, and soil composition, and has been frequently invited to give lectures at scientific forums and to supervise graduate students. One of her most recent publications is a landmark synthesis of the Surficial geology of northern Canada, produced in collaboration with colleagues from across the country. Her current work focuses on making geoscience knowledge more accessible to Inuit communities in northern Canada.

Beyond her passion for geology, Isabelle is an avid outdoor enthusiast—an accomplished cross-country skier and a fervent open-water swimmer in the lakes of the Canadian Shield near her home north of Ottawa.
