Dennis Romano

Dennis Romano is a historian of medieval and Renaissance Europe and the Mediterranean, with a specialization in the history of Venice. He first became interested in the lagoon city when he studied there for a semester as an undergraduate. The Walter Montgomery and Marian Gruber Professor of History emeritus at Syracuse University, he is the author of five books including The Likeness of Venice: A Life of Doge Francesco Foscari, 1373-1457 and Venice: The Remarkable History of the Lagoon City, published in 2024 by Oxford University Press. He is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships including a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Ailsa Mellon Bruce Senior Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. He is an honorary fellow of the Venetian Athenaeum. An avid gardener, Dennis would like to have been a landscape architect if he had not become a historian. He lives in Washington, D.C.
