Overview
  • Experience two of South America’s last great frontiers—the majestic fjords and glaciers of Southern Patagonia and the dramatic landscape of Torres del Paine. Our journey begins with three nights in Buenos Aires, where you’ll capture the essence of Argentina. Fly to Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost urban center, and set sail on a three-night cruise aboard the M.V. Stella Australis, an expedition ship built specifically for sailing the Patagonian channels. Cruise through the Strait of Magellan and the Beagle and Murray channels to Cape Horn, followed by a call at Magdalena Island, home to more than 120,000 Magellanic penguins.

    Disembark in Punta Arenas and spend three days immersed in the natural wonders of Torres del Paine, renowned for its mountain peaks, glaciers, turquoise lakes, rushing rivers, and thunderous waterfalls. Then fly to Chile’s Lake District, where you’ll experience Vicente Pérez Rosales Park, Osorno Volcano, and Petrohue Waterfalls. Your adventure concludes in Santiago with a private winery tour.

  • Throughout this tour, travel in the company of an exceptional Smithsonian Study Leader. Pepper Trail has traveled around the world in the course of his studies on the ecology, behavior and conservation of birds. After receiving his Ph. D. from Cornell University, Pepper did post-doctoral research at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the California Academy of Sciences. Pepper will be on the January 10, 2014 departure. Patricia Hostiuck is a popular and respected naturalist in tropical as well as polar ecosystems. She has worked as a freelance naturalist and lecturer on numerous expedition ships. Patty has led over 50 trips with Smithsonian Journeys, including over 20 to Antarctica, Tierra del Fuego, and Patagonia. She will lead the February 14, 2014 departure. Kirt Kempter received his Ph.D. in geology from the University of Texas at Austin and has visited and studied plate tectonics and related volcanism around the world, including Iceland, Costa Rica, Mexico, and South America. Kirt will be on the March 21, 2014 departure.
