Alan Gallay

Dr. Alan Gallay is the Lyndon. B. Johnson Chair of History at Texas Christian University, where he teaches and researches Atlantic World and American history  His specialty is the colonial era. Gallay taught at the universities of Notre Dame, Mississippi, Western Washington, Harvard (as a Mellon Faculty Fellow) and Auckland, New Zealand (as a Fulbright Lecturer), and The Ohio State University, where he was Director of the Center for Historical Research. He twice held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Gallay’s most recent books include Colonial and Revolutionary America (Prentice Hall), Indian Slavery in Colonial America (Univ. of Nebraska Press), and The Indian Slave Trade:  The Rise of the English Empire in the American South, 1670-1717 (Yale University Press), which received the Bancroft Prize, the Washington State Book Award, selection as a Choice Magazine Academic Book of the Year and selection by Library Journal  as one of the ten most important books about Native Americans published over the previous thirty years.  His current book project is titled “Ralegh and the Origins of English Colonialism in Ireland and the Americas.”
