Days 1 & 2 — Depart the U.S. and Arrive in Sorrento, Italy

Depart the U.S. on your transatlantic flight and arrive at  Naples Capodichino International Airport. Upon arrival, transfer to Sorrento and the upscale, centrally located Hotel Plaza Sorrento where you’ll receive a Welcome Package with maps and general information about the area. Your Smithsonian Journeys Travel Director will be available this afternoon and throughout the program for suggestions regarding independent activities and restaurants.

Join fellow Smithsonian Journeys travelers for an orientation walk of the neighborhood surrounding the hotel. This evening, gather for a welcome reception followed by an introduction by your Smithsonian Journeys Expert. A welcome dinner will be served at the hotel. (R,D)

Day 3 — Positano / Amalfi

A full American-style buffet breakfast is served each morning during your stay.

It has been said the beauty of the Amalfi Coast, a World Heritage site, defies description. Drive along the hairpin coastal road, which offers breathtaking views and is considered one of the world’s most remarkable travel experiences. Visit Positano, where colorful houses cascade down the hillside to the sea and enjoy leisure time to soak in the town’s charm. Continue by private boat to the iconic town of Amalfi where a walking tour takes you to the central piazza and the Cathedral of Saint Andrea.

This evening, gather for a dinner of regional flavors at a restaurant in Sorrento. (B,D)

Day 4 — Paestum

Travel south along the Bay of Naples to Paestum, site of some of the most magnificent and well-preserved examples of Greek architecture outside Greece and a World Heritage site. Known as Poseidonia during ancient times, the site includes spectacular remains of Doric temples honoring Hera, Athena, and Poseidon. After lunch near the site, meet with locals for a discussion about life in Italy today.

In the early evening, attend a presentation by a local speaker about the world-class collections of the Naples National Museum. (B,L)

Day 5 — Naples

Depart on a fascinating excursion to Naples, where the historic center has been designated a World Heritage site. Explore the Naples National Museum, an important archaeological museum that showcases remarkable Roman artifacts and the impressive Farnese Collection of Roman sculpture. You’ll also view antiquities from Herculaneum and Pompeii, including mosaics, domestic items, weapons, and murals.

Visit the top of Posillipo Hill for a sprawling view of the city and the entire Bay of Naples. Enjoy the sights of the Castel Nuovo, the Piazza Plebiscito, the Teatro San Carlo, one of the world’s most famous opera houses, and the Church of San Francesco di Paola. After lunch in the city, return to Sorrento. In the early evening, gather with fellow travelers for time in the Smithsonian Journeys Travelers Corner. (B,L)

Day 6 — Isle of Capri

Travel by hydrofoil to the enchanting Isle of Capri, a celebrated resort since the time of the Roman Republic. Sail around the island by private boat, where hidden swimming coves, caves, and grottos are found along the shoreline, and see why the island is described as “a piece of paradise fallen from the skies.” Back on land, stroll through the main town of Capri with its scenic lanes and elegant boutiques on Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Camerelle, Capri’s main streets. You’ll also visit the Augustus Gardens, incredible terraced gardens full of bougainvillea, marble statues, and lily ponds. The gardens offer a spectacular seaside spot for viewing the famous Faraglioni, a trio of iconic rock spires rising from the sea.

Return to Sorrento late in the day then gather with fellow travelers for dinner at a popular local restaurant. (B,D)

Day 7 — Pompeii and Herculaneum

Spend a full day exploring the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, both important World Heritage sites. These cities were destroyed on a tragic day in August 79 A.D. by the cataclysmic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. During the eruption, Pompeii was covered by volcanic ash, which preserved its buildings and frescoes for centuries. At the same time, mudflows preserved the smaller wealthy seaside town of Herculaneum. The preservation of the cities is unlike anything else in the world. Today each is famous as an excavation site and outdoor museum that reveals how people lived in these ancient Roman settlements 2,000 years ago. Enjoy a captivating history lesson as you explore many of the important houses and other sites in both cities, with time to relax over lunch near Pompeii.

Return to Sorrento late in the day. Gather this evening in the Smithsonian Journeys Travelers Corner to share insights and experiences from your excursions. Then, a local expert joins the group for a presentation on Contemporary Italy. (B,L)

Day 8 — Sorrento

Take an excursion to the hills above Sorrento where orange and lemon groves struggle for primacy with olive groves. During a visit to a farm, take a tour through sprawling groves and see how olive oil is produced. Later, see the rest of the farm and its production of the soft cheese Fior di Latte.

Return to the hotel where the balance of the day is free of planned activities. This evening, join fellow Smithsonian Journeys travelers for a farewell dinner at a popular Sorrento restaurant. (B, D)
