Overview

Known as the “Cradle of Western Civilization,” Greece is an enticing blend of history, diverse cultural influences, archaeological gems, and stunning natural beauty. Begin in Athens at the venerable Hotel Grande Bretagne on Syntagma Square before embarking Sea Cloud II for a seven-night voyage to famous and lesser-known sites on the Greek Islands and along the Peloponnese.

Highlights Include

  • Athens: Enjoy dramatic night-time views of the Acropolis and Parthenon during your welcome reception at the Hotel Grande Bretagne. The next morning, view the collections of the Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art, featuring art and artifacts from one of the three earliest Aegean cultures, dating from c. 3300 to 1100 B.C. In the afternoon, board Sea Cloud II and cruise to the center of the Cycladic Islands.
  • Greek Islands: Spend three days exploring the Cyclades. Delos is considered the most sacred isle as it’s the mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. On Naxos, you’ll walk the cobblestone streets of Apeiranthos village and see the Kouros statue in Melanes. And on Milos, learn about the obsidian mines and volcanic geological features of this island chain. Your afternoons feature swimming in the Aegean or sailing between the islands.
  • The Peloponnese: Travel to the fortified town of Mystras, situated near ancient Sparta, and designated a World Heritage site. Later, cruise to Nafplion and marvel at the impressive site of Mycenae, known for the story of Agamemnon, and Epidaurus, with its impressive 4th-century theater and important asclepeion temple. Back aboard ship, stop at the Saronic island of Hydra, a quiet island with no cars, where Athenians go for respite.
  • The Sea Cloud II Experience: White sails billowing aloft three tall masts, a vision to behold. Nothing can top the experience of sailing aboard the square-rigger Sea Cloud II with her 23 sails all set by hand. Watch in awe as crew members climb the rigging to set the sails. Savor fine dining in the luxurious salon or on the open teak deck, enjoy engaging presentations and casual conversation in the piano lounge, and depending on your interests, discover the library, fitness studio, spa services, or swim platform. Yet you’ll also feel comfortable retiring to your cabin or suite—a spacious, stylish, and delightful retreat. See more information in the Tour Details tab. Our voyage will also host other leading cultural and educational institutions, which will add to the excitement and energy of the experience.

Choose to head into the mountains or stay close to the coast during optional morning excursions. Amble through Apeiranthos, the crown jewel of Naxos, a colorful mountainous village with stone-built houses, beautiful squares and narrow alleys paved with marble; and marvel at the Kouros of Apollonas, the giant and ancient statue of Dionysus lying unfinished in one of Greece’s oldest quarries. Or take in the views from the huge Venetian castle in Chora, the island's capital, that once protected the city from attackers before heading to Agia Anna, an idyllic fishing village with lovely bays and beaches on both sides enticing a swim or snorkel in the crystal-clear water. Return to the ship for lunch, followed by an afternoon of sailing between islands. (B,L,D)
