Board the iconic tall ship Sea Cloud II and cruise along the northern coast of Portugal and Spain for an exhilarating sea voyage. From Lisbon to Bilbao, you'll experience many of the cultural highlights of each country.

Highlights Include

  • Portugal: Reflect on Portugal’s seafaring past in Lisbon at the Tower of Belém and Discoveries Monument, and visit Jeronimos Monastery and the superb art collections of the Gulbenkian Museum. Nearby, explore the impressive National Palace in Sintra and the enchanting gardens of Quinta Regaleira, both World Heritage sites, plus the fishing village of Cascais. Then, take the train to Porto, located at the mouth of the Douro River. 

  • Spain: Set sail for the delightful nature reserve of Islas Cies. Later, experience the grandeur of the great cathedral at Santiago de Compostela and feel like pilgrims as you watch the swinging of the large botafumeiro (by special arrangement). Stop at the Altamira Museum, devoted to northern Spain’s paleolithic cave art. Disembark your ship in Bilbao, and enjoy a tour of the Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Gehry.

  • Cultural Enhancements: Enjoy the poignant music of traditional fado and sample outstanding wines and distinctive regional cuisines.

  • Sea Cloud II: Embark on a sailing experience like none other aboard one of the most elegant and luxurious tall ships in service, the Sea Cloud II. During a full day at sea, enjoy the thrill of watching the skilled crew set its 23 sails to catch the winds. 


Day 1 — Depart the U.S.

Day 2 — Arrive in Lisbon, Portugal

Arrive at Lisbon Portela International Airport and transfer to the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz, located adjacent to the sprawling Eduardo VII Park.

Once you are settled into your accommodations your afternoon and evening are free to explore the city with lunch and dinner independently.

Day 3 — Lisbon

Built on seven low hills, Lisbon commands a view of its superb natural harbor at the mouth of the Tagus River. Visit two World Heritage sites: the Belem Tower, an elegant 15th-century structure built to defend the city from attacks; and the Jeronimos Monastery, the jewel of Manueline architecture, where the renowned Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama is buried.

Enjoy a private performance of fado, Portugal’s poignant traditional music, and explore the superb Gulbenkian Museum, whose collections span every major epoch of Western art.  (B,L,R,D)

Day 4 — Lisbon / Sintra

Visit the National Palace in Sintra Vila, the best preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal. Wander the enchanting gardens of Quinta Regaleira, a decorative 20th century residence, whose gardens were styled with hidden tunnels and concealed symbolism. Continue to the attractive seaside resort town of Cascais for lunch before returning to Lisbon. The evening and dinner are at leisure.  (B,L)

Day 5 — Lisbon / Porto / Embark

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and transfer to Porto. Enjoy lunch and a private tasting of the region’s iconic port wine at a historic lodge before embarking Sea Cloud II this afternoon and setting off for Spain.  (B,L,D)

Day 6 — Islas Cies, Spain

Take tenders ashore at Isla Cies National Park, an archipelago off the coast of Galicia in northwestern Spain. Once a pirates’ haunt, today Cies is uninhabited and pristine, with beautiful beaches, clear unpolluted water, and redolent pine forests.  (B,L,D)

Day 7 — Santiago de Compostela

From the port of La Coruna, drive to the pilgrimage town of Santiago de Compostela, which for centuries has drawn pilgrims from all over the world. Here, according to legend, a 9th-century peasant led by the light of a shining star discovered the tomb of Saint James (Santiago) in a field. In the beautiful medieval heart of the city, visit the enormous cathedral, begun in 1075 and expanded in the 16th and 18th centuries. Observe a specially arranged swinging of the famous botafumeiro (censer) and enjoy lunch in a Gothic-arched dining room in one of Spain’s most celebrated paradores.  (B,L,D)

Day 8 — At Sea

Relax during a full day of cruising, with an opportunity to experience the ship under sail (weather permitting) and enjoy Sea Cloud II’s many amenities as the lecture program continues.  (B,L,D)

Day 9 — Santander

Cruise through the morning and enjoy lunch alfresco on deck (weather permitting). Call at lively Santander and visit the fascinating museum at Altamira, dedicated to the nearby UNESCO-listed cave containing 15,000-year-old wall paintings, including a detailed recreation of the cave’s main chamber. Also stop at the charming village of Santillana del Mar for a stroll along its medieval cobbled streets before returning to Sea Cloud II for a farewell reception and dinner.  (B,L,D)

Day 10 — Bilbao / Disembark

Disembark and visit Bilbao’s crown jewel and award-winning architect Frank Gehry’s masterpiece, the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum. This icon of 20th-century architecture also houses a collection of some of the most intriguing artworks of our age. Enjoy a gala Basque lunch and an afternoon and evening free for independent exploration.  (B,L)

Day 11 — Bilbao / Home

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for flights home. (B)
