  • Norway’s Coast: Beginning from the charming World Heritage site of Bergen, “gateway to the Fjords,” your cruise stops at many ports and passes the Arctic Circle to arrive at the North Cape and Kirkenes. Along the way, view the magnificent scenery, stop at one of the northernmost points in Europe, and learn about Viking heritage and the modern lifestyle of the northern Sami peoples. You’ll also meet with local residents as they join passengers for a day’s travel (the best means of transportation in this region).

Day 1 — Depart the U.S. for Bergen, Norway

Day 2 — Bergen

Arrive in Bergen, a city surrounded by seven mountains and cultural gateway to the fjords. Bergen was founded in A.D. 1070, and was the capital of Norway for several years. The city is a central point for Norwegian travel, and has retained a great deal of its local historical character. Join your fellow travelers for a welcome reception this evening. (R) 

Day 3 — Bergen- Embarkation

Enjoy an overview tour of Bergen en route to Troldhaugen. Troldhaugen was officially named a museum in 1928 and includes Edvard Grieg’s Villa, the composer’s hut, and the Grieg couple’s gravesite. Newer additions include the modern museum building and the concert hall Troldsalen, a chamber music hall seating 200 people. Following the visit, transfer to the pier to embark the Spitsbergen and set sail this evening. (B,D)

Day 4 — Hjørundfjord

Wake up early to see Hornelen, the mountain that according to the saga was climbed by the Viking King Olav Tryggvason. After a brief stop in Ålesund, explore Hjørundfjord, situated amidst the majestic Sunnmøre Alps' unspoiled nature, tiny hamlets and mountain farms. Only a very small number of ships sail into this fjord. You may choose to join an optional excursion or explore on your own. (B,L,D) 

Day 5 — Trondheim

Explore Trondheim, Norway’s third largest city, dating back to A.D. 997. Enjoy an exclusive tour of the Nidaros Cathedral, Norway’s most famous church and the only one built in Gothic style. The church was built over the grave of St. Olav, the national saint of Norway, and for almost a millennium, it has played a central role in the history of the town and the nation. Here you will enjoy the impressive Romanesque and Gothic architecture with its lofty vaults, slender pillars, and delicate ornaments. Meander through some of the hidden chambers of the cathedral with a private guide. In the basement, walk through the dark passages of the tombstone crypt, and explore the largest collection of medieval tombstones in Norway. Winding stairs lead to small, enchanting chapels from the 12th century(B,L,D)

Day 6 — Bodø

Welcome to the Arctic! Today, cross the Arctic Circle. Norway's second largest glacier, Svartisen, is located near the old trading village and port of call Ørnes. The journey continues along the beautiful Helgeland coast, considered by many to be just as spectacular as Lofoten. In the afternoon, sail from Bodø across Vestfjord, and the impressive Lofotveggen Mountain will appear on the horizon. Today, you may choose to join an optional excursion or hike with our expedition team. Gather with your fellow Smithsonian Journeys travelers for an exclusive forum with your onboard crew; “A day in the life of a Norwegian” to learn more about this fascinating region from the locals who know it best. Day 7 — Tromsø

Visit Tromsø, the capital of the Arctic. Enjoy an exclusive visit to the famous Tromsø Planetarium. The largest planetarium in Norway, its dome ceilings allow for spectacular film screenings, including the planetarium’s Northern Lights film, filmed mostly in the Tromsø region. (B,L,D) 

Day 8 — Honningsvåg

Enjoy the magnificent landscape as you journey towards the North Cape. Enjoy a private tour to cross the 71st parallel towards the North Cape, the northernmost point on the continent. The North Cape plateau itself rises 307 meters almost vertically from the Arctic Ocean. See “the globe” sculpture, which has become the symbol of the North Cape. At the North Cape Hall, you can see an impressive 180° panoramic film about Finnmark and the North Cape. This evening, enjoy a festive farewell reception. (B,L,R,D)

Day 9 — Kirkenes / Oslo / Depart for the U.S.

Kirkenes is known as the capital of the Barents Region and is the gateway to the east. Upon arrival into Kirkenes, enjoy an overview tour en route to the airport for a flight to Oslo. You may choose to extend your stay by a few days to visit Norway’s capital city or schedule your international flights home today. (B)
