Itinerary

Day 1 – Washington, D.C

Meet fellow travelers, your expert trip leaders and dedicated guest services staff for a festive welcome dinner at the hotel. The journey begins with a flight to Iceland the following morning. (R,D)

Day 2-3 – Lake Mývatn, Iceland

From black-sand beaches to rugged fjords, Iceland’s stunning landscapes have been formed largely by volcanic activity over millions of years. Lake Mývatn in northeastern Iceland offers a captivating blend of diverse ecosystems and Icelandic heritage that will delight nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Tour the lava formations of Dimmuborgir, the Skútustaðagígar pseudo craters, the active Krafla volcano and the steaming vents of Námaskarð. Tour to the Lofthellir cave, where ice and lava converge. On a visit to the coastal town of Húsavík (weather permitting), embark on a whale watching adventure or enjoy a restful soak in the geothermal sea baths. Iceland will be the first of many opportunities to view the Northern Lights. (B,L,D)

Day 4-5 – Ålesund, Norway

Gather back aboard the jet and continue east to Norway. Situated across seven small islands, Ålesund is considered one of the country’s most beautiful towns. Rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1904, the port town boasts an unusual concentration of art nouveau architecture. Venture out to encounter the beauty of the fjords, where steep cliffs rise from the mist and ancient glaciers carve through stone. For those interested in casting their reel, take a guided fishing trip along the Møre coast during the peak spawning migration of cod. Or stop in the village of Glomset to discover Norwegian food traditions and indulge in a farm-fresh lunch highlighting the preservation of local traditions. For those desiring a more active pursuit, there will be an opportunity for a guided kayaking trip through stunning fjords. (B,L,D)

Day 6-8 – Rovaniemi, Finland

Rovaniemi, part of Finnish Lapland, was founded as a trading post for fur, fish and timber due to its location at the fork of the Ounasjoki River and Kemijoki River. Known as the official hometown of Santa Claus, this magical city offers an array of winter activities, from sledding safaris to reindeer encounters. Travel through majestic forest to learn more about reindeer caretaking practices and get up close with these magnificent creatures. Embrace local traditions and participate in an Arctic Circle Crossing Ceremony, marking your entry into the polar regions. Embark on a snowshoe trek through snow-covered forests, with a stop to learn the art of ice fishing. For a truly unique experience, float weightlessly on frozen waters while suited up in state-of-the-art rescue gear. End the day with a warm drink in hand, curled up in a cozy chair, and take in the stunning views of the Northern Lights from the panoramic windows of your suite. (B,L,D)
