Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive in New York

Arrive in New York and settle into your hotel, located in the heart of the theater district. This evening, meet your fellow travelers for a welcome reception and dinner. Your Smithsonian Journeys Expert will give you an overview of your theater week. (R,D)

Day 2 — New York

This morning, meet with a literary director or dramaturg to discuss the play-development process.  The journey from page to stage is unique to each production, and the stories of how plays come together are as varied as the plays themselves. After lunch as a group, spend your afternoon with a musical theater veteran actor/actress for a private class. Learn the tricks of the trade and what it’s like backstage on Broadway. This evening, experience an off-Broadway offering. (L)

Day 3 —New York

Spend a morning at leisure before embarking on a “two-show day.” Enjoy a matinee performance of a Broadway play or musical. Post-matinee, enjoy dinner and conversation as a group before catching an evening performance of another one of Broadway’s finest plays. Each selection has been carefully curated by your Expert and will provide the foundation for lively discussion during a post-show cocktail at one of a theater insiders’ favorite hangouts. (D)

Day 4 — New York

After several days of watching how it’s done on stage, today you will be able to step into the shoes of Broadway performers. Join a Broadway dancer-choreographer for a private tap demonstration at a Broadway rehearsal studio (no experience necessary!). After time to rest your feet, meet up as a group for a farewell dinner and performance at Feinstein’s/54 Below, New York’s premiere supper club and cabaret. Here you will have the opportunity to see a stellar Broadway performer create his or her own show. This might also be a great opportunity to spot other Broadway royalty in the audience. (D)

Day 5 — Depart New York

Depart for individual transportation home.

Included meals are denoted as follows: Breakfast (B), Lunch (L), Reception (R), Dinner (D)
