Amazon Rainforest – 4 Days, 4 Nights
Discover the Amazon’s amazing flora, fauna, and culture on this exceptional tour.
Day 1—Depart the U.S. for Lima, Peru
Board a flight to Lima, arriving late in the evening. Trip staff will be on hand to guide you to your hotel, conveniently located just across from the hotel.
Wyndham Grand Costa del Sol Lima Airport
Day 2—Lima/Iquitos/Amazon Rainforest
A morning flight brings you to Iquitos, where you’ll meet your Amazon guide, an experienced naturalist who will remain with you for the duration of your rainforest stay. Cruise down the Amazon River to Ceiba Tops, your comfortable home in the Amazon jungle. In the afternoon, opt for a guided rainforest hike. Tonight, we enjoy dinner at our jungle lodge.
Please note: Because of weight restrictions on the boat, your luggage can weigh no more than 33 lbs. (in addition to your carry-on) while traveling through the Amazon. Should your luggage exceed this weight limit, you will need to store it in the secured Iquitos office of Ceiba Tops until you return on Day 5. We recommend bringing a small, collapsible duffle bag that fits in your main luggage to be used for the Amazon portion of your trip. You will be able to leave your primary checked luggage behind in Lima, and will be reunited with it upon your return from the Amazon. (B,D)
Day 3—Amazon Rainforest
Rise early this morning for a birding excursion; this is the best time to observe a diversity of species, including cormorants, darters, and herons. Then visit a community of Yagua Indians, known for their skill in blowgun hunting. Watch for dolphins on a boating excursion before lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, venture to a nearby village to see firsthand the authentic life of ribereños, the indigenous people who live along the Amazon River. (B,L,D)
Day 4—Canopy Walkway
After breakfast, take a boat to the nearby town of Indiana, and continue by tuk-tuk through town to the Napo River, where another boat awaits to bring you deeper into the rainforest. From ExplorNapo Lodge, follow a spectacular canopy walkway that weaves through the treetops some 115 above the rainforest floor. Enjoy a rare chance to see the rainforest from above—an astounding sight. Hike back to ExplorNapo for lunch, followed by a visit to an ethno-botanical garden where a local shaman cultivates more than 240 medicinal plants. Gain insight into how people of the Amazon use these plants for medicinal and healing purposes. Late this afternoon, return to Ceiba Tops in time to rest or relax by the pool before dinner together. (B,L,D)
Please note: Though the canopy walkway is one of the longest suspended walkways in the world, it is accessible to everyone and does not require special skills or equipment to cross.
Day 5—Ceiba Tops/Iquitos/Lima
Return by boat to Iquitos in time for the flight to Lima, enjoying lunch along the way. Take a group transfer to your centrally located hotel, and meet the main group the next day. (B,L)

Paul Goldstein is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, San Diego. His teaching and research focus on anthropological archaeology, complex societies, and climate and culture change in Latin America, and Andean South America.
Paul's recent research involves the study of how the Tiwanaku civilization, the earliest state level polity that emerged in the important Lake Titicaca region of the southern Andes, expanded (ca. 350-1000 CE), setting many patterns for the subsequent rise of the Inca empire.
He has directed multiple field archaeology projects and received a variety of funding for research in Peru, Chile and Ecuador, including grants from the National Science Foundation, Wenner-Gren, Fulbright, Heinz, Tinker and Mellon Foundation. Paul is Vice President of the Institute for Andean Studies and has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards including the Dumbarton Oaks Fellowship in Pre-Columbian Studies and has held several positions at Dartmouth College, Museo Contisuyo, Peru; American Museum of Natural History, New York; Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago; and Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago.

Dennis Ogburn is an archaeologist who specializes in the study of the Inca Empire and other ancient societies in Andean South America. He has been active in fieldwork and research in Andean archaeology for more than 20 years, leading or participating in work in the southern and northern highlands of Ecuador and in the Cuzco, Ayacucho, and Nazca regions of Peru. His research is at the intersection of science and history, as he employs scientific techniques such as geochemical sourcing and radiocarbon dating in combination with the analysis of historical documents. Dennis has written a number of scholarly works and articles in prominent journals, covering topics ranging from Inca warfare to the long‐distance movement of massive building stones. Recently, he has been investigating the interpretation of quipus, the Inca writing system, as well as the contents of drinking vessels found on the Peruvian coast.
A native of North Carolina, Dennis went west to attend college at Rice University before moving even further west to earn his master’s and PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He worked at the Archaeological Research Facility at the University of California, Berkeley before moving back east, where he is now associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, teaching courses in archaeology and ethnohistory. In addition to a general affinity for old things, his interests include playing guitar, hiking, bicycling, collecting rocks, and learning about native plants and animals.

Activity Description
Expectations: This Land Journey will feature long touring days, many full-day excursions, some steep ascents/descents, and more active options. Several days/nights in Peru will be spent in remote and/or rugged regions, and at high altitude (Cuzco: 11,150 feet; Machu Picchu: 8,000 feet). Excursions require standing and walking for extended periods of time on uneven terrain (cobblestones, city hills, stairs without handrails, ruins, steep trails with muddy and slippery conditions), embarking and disembarking a yacht, and walking in city centers where coaches are prohibited. The itinerary includes some early morning departures and late evening arrivals. Leisure time may be limited (sometimes only in the later evenings). On certain days, more active excursions are available, such as moderate hiking, swimming, and snorkeling.
Appropriate for: Travelers who are physically fit, lead active lives, are comfortable participating in long days of activities, and expect some physical exertion.

Testimonials
What our travelers are saying...
— Dann, Z.My first guided trip... I was overwhelmed with how well Smithsonian Journeys ran and led this 15-day trip through Peru and Ecuador. We already booked another Smithsonian Journeys Trip!
— Steve and Nancy S.This was our first time with a tour group. An excellent experience in every way! The tour directors, expert, and guides were incredibly knowledgeable. I'm so glad we chose Smithsonian Journeys!
— Andrew K."The [journey] to Peru and Ecuador was meticulously planned. Its quick pace allowed us to cover a large number of places and this was a big plus. The Smithsonian Expert provided the crucial context of the pre-Inca and the Inca civilizations. He was a great source of knowledge to everyone: during his illuminating lectures, but also during the excursions to many places and museums that we visited together. One of the best trips that my wife and I have undertaken because of itinerary, the expert and tour directors, and excellent accommodations. We are already planning the next trip with the Smithsonian!"
