Discover modern Tokyo and traditional Kyoto with your family! In Tokyo, spend a day focusing on the popular topic of anime. You’ll also meet a Japanese family in their home, check out a fish market, and learn to make sushi. Take a nature hike in the forests of Mt. Fuji and enjoy a stay at a traditional ryokan (inn). Then ride the bullet train to Kyoto. Here, learn about traditional drawing and indigo dyeing techniques as well as kimono dressing or Taiko drumming. Plus, explore stunning temples and imperial palaces.


Days 1 & 2 — Depart the U.S. / Tokyo

Welcome to Tokyo! Considered by many as the economic and fashion capital of Asia, Tokyo is the world's largest metropolitan area by population. Home to thousands of purikura (sticker picture) machines, pachinko parlors, karaoke shops, and even cat cafes, Japan is Asian modernity and eccentricity at its very finest. Upon arrival after your overnight flight, you will be transferred to your hotel by car or motorcoach where you can relax and unwind before a welcome dinner. You will spend the first five nights of your journey in Tokyo so unpack and enjoy! (D)

Day 3 — Tokyo

Wake up refreshed and ready to explore Tokyo! This morning you’ll explore the heart of the Old Edo era in Japan’s oldest section. Visit the Asakusa (Sensoji) Temple, the oldest and most impressive temple in Tokyo. Destroyed in World War II, the temple has been rebuilt and bustles with people praying, buying fortunes, shopping or sightseeing at the nearby Nakamise, a traditional shopping arcade. Next, you’ll head to the Tsukiji outer fish market where you’ll meet local vendors selling hundreds of types of sushi grade fish. Learn how to make this Japanese culinary specialty during a sushi making class with a local chef! This afternoon you’ll get a bird’s eye view of Tokyo’s skyline from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office observatory, 45-floors up with panoramic views that stretch to Mt. Fuji! Return to the hotel for dinner with the group. (B,D) 

Day 4 — Tokyo

Start the day at the Ghibli Musem, which showcases the work of the Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli. Dubbed as a “portal to a storybook world,” the museum allows visitors to get lost together in the imagination of Hayao Miyazaki. You’ll see the giant Cat Bus from Totoro and the Robot from Laputa, bonding with your family as you learn about the behind-the-scenes world of this animation powerhouse. Later you’ll visit Nakano Broadway, a complex that specializes in all things otaku, from the brand new trendy animes to the retro nostalgic sentai shows from the Showa period. This afternoon, meet students training to be anime voice actors! Tonight enjoy another relaxing dinner at the hotel with your family. (B,D)

Day 5 — Akhibara / Harajuku

Today, explore Akhibara, the center of gaming, manga and anime culture in Japan. Featuring electronics shops, maid cafes, and anime stores, it is a paradise for any self-proclaimed otaku. Next, you’ll stop in the trendy Harajuku area, the center of Japanese youth culture and fashion. Stop by the resplendent Meiji Shrine and then make your way to Roppongi Hills, where you’ll have lunch in the international gourmet center of Tokyo. Alive at all hours of the day, Roppongi attracts large crowds with its dazzling neon lights and embassies, just steps away from traditional shopping districts, old temples and historic ruins. Here you’ll learn how the old and the new coexist in modern Japan. (B,L) 

Day 6 — Tokyo

This morning you and your family will travel to the Tokyo suburbs on the renowned Tokyo Metro. Once outside the city, you’ll meet a Japanese family and spend the day in their home. You will get to learn about daily life in Japan, meet and play with Japanese children and share a traditional lunch with your host family in their home. Full from a day of being welcomed into a Japanese family, you’ll return to the hotel for dinner on your own and a restful evening before departing for Mt. Fuji! (B,L)

Day 7 — Tokyo / Mt. Fuji / Hakone

Depart Tokyo this morning and head to Mt. Fuji. Explore the base of the mountain on an Eco Forest Walk with a naturalist guide, then bus up to the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station, the gateway to climbing Mt. Fuji. There you’ll go on a short trek and have the opportunity to capture photos of the awe-inspiring peak of the largest mountain and active volcano in Japan! Those who prefer to skip the hike will have the opportunity to attend a noodle-making class, where you’ll learn how to cook noodles like a professional. This afternoon you’ll arrive in Hakone, where you will stay in a traditional Japanese-style room. This evening, take in a relaxing hot spring bath (onsen) and enjoy a sumptuous dinner in your room, an age-old Japanese tradition. (B,D)

Day 8 — Hakone / Kyoto

This morning, wake rested and explore the town of Hakone where you'll see the Ōwakudani Valley, a volcanic valley with active sulphur vents and hot springs. Enjoy the majestic views, and have the opportunity to taste the legendary, Kuro-tamago, a local specialty of eggs hard-boiled in the hot springs which said to increase longevity, adding seven years to your life! Depart Hakone and board the famous shinkansen, Japanese High Speed Bullet Train. Running at speeds of up to 320 km/h, these world-class trains are known for their punctuality, comfort, safety and efficiency. Tonight you’ll arrive in Kyoto, the former capital of Japan, and enjoy dinner in the hotel. (B,D)

Day 9 — Kyoto

Today, visit the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Renovated from a primary school, Kyoto International Manga Museum houses about 300,000 manga and comic books. Its collection includes not only those recently published but also classic works from as old as the 19th-century. This morning you’ll also learn about Japanese ai-zome, indigo dyeing, and culture. Ai-zome became increasingly popular in the Edo period (1600-1868) when laws were passed preventing the lower classes from wearing silk and cotton became the popular alternative. Make your very own “Japan-blue” souvenir during this authentic indigo dyeing experience. This afternoon, you’ll see the highlights of old Kyoto–the Kinkaku-ji Temple (Golden Pavilion), Nijō Castle, and Kiyomizu Temple, regarded as World Heritage sites and national treasures. Tonight enjoy dinner at your hotel and a relaxing evening. (B,D) 

Day 10 — Kyoto

Immerse yourself in Japanese culture by enjoying hands-on learning experiences! This morning, you can choose to learn about traditional Japanese fashion during a kimono dressing experience, or feel the beat as you learn to play taiko, a traditional Japanese drum practice! This afternoon, learn the art of origami, Japanese paper folding. You’ll make your very own traditional folding fan. Gather tonight for a festive farewell dinner. (B,D)

Day 11 — Depart Kyoto

After checking out of the hotel you will be transferred to Kansai International Airport (KIX) and return home.
