May 20–23, 2014 — Kamakura & the Hot Springs Resort of Hakone
On this optional post-trip extension, travel outside of Tokyo for a two-night stay at a traditional Japanese inn, or ryokan, in the hot springs resort of Hakone. Weather permitting, enjoy wonderful views of Mt. Fuji. En route to Hakone, visit the historic center of Kamakura, with its Zen temples and famous Daibutsu, a giant bronze statue of Buddha. Conclude with a final night in Tokyo before flights home to the U.S.

April 7–11, 2015 — Pre-Trip Extension to Kamakura and Hakone
On this optional pre-trip extension, begin with a hotel night in Tokyo to get oriented, then travel outside of Tokyo for a two-night stay at a traditional Japanese inn, or ryokan, in the hot springs resort of Hakone. April 23–28, 2015 — Post-Trip Extension to Naoshima, Shikokou’s Iya Valley, and Nara
On this optional post-trip extension, visit the small island of Naoshima, which has recently emerged as a mecca of contemporary art and architecture. Then travel back in time to Shikoku Island’s remote Iya Valley, which preserves vine suspension bridges, thatched-roof farmhouses, and village traditions that date from the Edo period. In the Iya Valley, enjoy accommodations at a ryokan hotel with indoor and outdoor hot spring baths. Conclude with a visit to the ancient capital of Nara.
