Overview

Activity Level 3:  Moderate / Active

Expectations: Most trips will feature long touring days, many full-day excursions, and a full and active itinerary with a faster pace and longer distances. Some tours may have activities with higher intensity and more active choices/options. Excursions require standing and walking for extended periods of time over more difficult terrain (cobblestones, city hills, stairs without handrails, limited or no access to elevators, muddy/slippery walking/hiking trails), and walking to city centers where coaches are prohibited. Specific itineraries may feature hiking, use of local transportation, extended overnight train travel, extensive use of Zodiac crafts or other smaller ship conveyances, or multiple internal plane rides. Some itineraries may require early morning departures and later evening returns. Travelers may be in remote and/or rugged regions, and may be touring at higher altitudes with steep ascents/descents. Leisure time may be limited (sometimes only in the later evenings). Certain tours feature more active excursions (such as moderate hiking, swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, bicycling, rafting, or kayaking), though another choice may be offered for an alternate skill level. Walking/hiking tours may feature up to six-mile walks/hikes.

Appropriate for: Travelers who are physically fit, lead active lives, are comfortable participating in long days of activities, and expect some physical exertion.

Itinerary

Days 1 & 2 — Depart the U.S., Arrive Reykjavik

After arrival at Keflavik International Airport, meet your local host. Since many flights from the U.S. arrive early in the morning, one early morning group transfer will be provided to your centrally located hotel. More information will be provided closer to departure when all flights plans have been made. Your luggage can be stored at the hotel; however, check-in is 2 pm.

In the morning, you can explore the area around our hotel.

In the afternoon gather for a guided tour and learn about the earliest settlers of this dramatic island as well as the story of Viking expansion across the North Atlantic. The Viking World Museum exhibition was produced in cooperation with the Smithsonian as part of the millennial celebration of Leifur Eriksson's journey to the New World. See an exact replica of an old Viking ship, called the Gokstad, which is dated to A.D. 870. Enjoy a welcome dinner. (D)

Day 3 — Reykjavik, Whale Watching Tour

After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, experience the world of whales and seabirds in their natural habitat during a whale watching cruise near Reykjavik. Commonly sighted are white-beaked dolphins, harbor porpoises, minke whales, and humpback whales.

After lunch, we will continue to the Blue Lagoon where you can relax in the pools or watch from the terrace. (B,L)

Day 4 — Golden Circle

Today depart Reykjavik for points south. En route, visit three of Iceland's best-known attractions, known collectively as The Golden Circle. First, stop at Gulfoss (The Golden Waterfall), one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe with thousands of tons of water thundering majestically into a deep canyon.

At the Geysir Area, observe many of the hot springs, fumaroles, and geysers, including Strokkur, which can reach a height of 100 feet. Finally, arrive at Thingvellir, a remarkable geological site where two major geologic plates collide, which is also the historic site of the first Parliament.

Arrive at your lodgings in Hella and enjoy a relaxing dinner near the hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 5 — South Shore

Visit the popular South Shore area, which features amazing sites of natural history, including two dramatic waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss, which tumble over high rock escarpments. See the stone arch Dyrhólaey with its sheer cliffs, a row of glaciers towering over the scenery, and the Reynisdrangar rock pillars decorating the black-sand beach of Reynihverfi.

You'll also stop at the picturesque village of Vik. From the Thorvaldseyri Visitor Center, walk through the dramatic glacier valley and explore the crevasse-riddled outlet glacier with its amazing ice formations, sinkholes, and jagged ridges.

Return to Reykjavik this evening. (B,L)

Day 6 — Journey Into the Glacier

This morning, set out on a journey into a glacier! On the drive to the Langjökull Ice Cave, which is located high on Europe’s second largest glacier, you‘ll explore the magical landscape, including Deildartunguhver, Europe‘s most powerful hot spring. Enjoy an excursion into the glacier itself where you'll see colors of blue you never knew existed and learn how glaciers hide the secrets of history.

Tonight, share your stories from the day during another hearty dinner near the hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 7 — Depart for the U.S.

Enjoy the morning at leisure, then transfer from your hotel directly to the airport for your afternoon flight.

If you are departing outside the recommended time, we are happy to arrange a private transfer for you at the additional cost: a party of 1-3 people is approximately $200 total one way, or party of 4-8 people is approximately $245 total one way.

Included meals are denoted as follows: Breakfast (B), Lunch (L), Reception (R), Dinner (D)
