Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the spectacular beauty of Norway’s dramatic fjords up close during exhilarating hikes on this new Active Journey. A stay in the coastal town of Bergen showcases the historic port of Byrggen, a World Heritage site, and other cultural sites, while delightful hikes above the city provide sweeping views of its dramatic setting. Enjoy the majestic beauty of Sognefjorden, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, during an afternoon ferry ride to Sogndal. Here, in the Sogndal region, travel to the stunning Nigardsbreen glacier for a fascinating hike on the blue surface ice. Spend a day climbing to the top of Mount Molden; at the summit, savor your personal accomplishment while enjoying panoramic views of fjords and mountains. Conclude your Norwegian adventure with a thrilling ride on the Flåm Railway, which hurtles through mountainside tunnels and along the Flåm River, then continue by train to Bergen. (Level 3/Daily hikes of 2 to 5 miles)

Day 1 — Depart the U.S.

Depart the U.S. on your overnight flight to Norway.

Day 2 — Arrive in Bergen

Welcome to Bergan, Norway’s second largest city. Upon arrival at the airport, transfer to the hotel for a brief orientation.

This afternoon, set out to explore this vibrant city on a walking tour, including the colorful waterfront. Tonight, enjoy a welcome dinner with your fellow guests. Walking 1-2 hours (D)

Day 3 – Explore Bergen

After breakfast, embark on today’s hike directly from the hotel. Explore the mountains that surround Bergen and take in beautiful panoramic views of the fjords. Stop to enjoy a picnic on the trail before returning to town.

This afternoon, visit the Edward Grieg Museum, a presentation on the life of the famous Norwegian composer and Bergen native. Dinner is on your own tonight. 2-3 hours hiking (B,L)

Day 4 — Mount Fløyen and Ferry to Sogndal

Start your morning by taking the Fløibanen funicular up to Mount Fløyen. From here the views of Bergen are incredible! Soak in the views on a relaxed hike atop Mount Fløyen before taking the funicular back down into town.

This afternoon we take a ferry down Norway’s longest fjord, the Sognefjorden, to Sogndal region, our home base for the next three nights. We’ll enjoy dinner together tonight at a restaurant in Sogndal. 2-3 hours hiking (B,L)

Day 5 – Glacier Hike

Today you will enjoy an amazing experience as you hike on the blue ice of the stunning Nigardsbreen glacier. Learn about the effects of climate change as you witness the glacier’s retreat. No experience is necessary, simply bring warm clothes and sturdy hiking boots. All other gear will be provided. We’ll stop to enjoy a tasty picnic lunch on the glacier, looking out to the vistas beyond.

Return to Sogndal in the afternoon. Dinner tonight will be on your own. 3-4 hours of glacier hiking (B,L)

Day 6 — Summit Mount Molden

Today we are in for a real treat as we climb Mount Molden! We will take it slow and steady as we make our way to the summit. Stop at the top to catch your breath and enjoy a sense of accomplishment as you take in incredible views of the fjords and mountains. We’ll have another great picnic at the top before enjoying our walk back down.

This afternoon, on the way back to our hotel, we’ll visit the historic 12th century Stave Church in Kaupanger. Transfer back to Sogndal where dinner is on your own. 4 hours hiking (B,L)

Day 7 — Return to Bergen

On our final day, we will leisurely make our way back to Bergen, taking time to enjoy the stunning scenery. Following breakfast, take a bus or ferry to the town of Flåm where a short transfer brings us to the trailhead of the beautiful Aurlandsdalen Valley. Located at the end of Sognefjord, it’s often referred to as the “Grand Canyon” of Norway.

Following lunch, we will board the train for the ride back to Bergen where our farewell dinner awaits. 1-hour hiking (B,L,D)

Day 8 — Departure

After a final breakfast, a group transfer is provided to the Bergen airport for your homeward-bound flight. (B)
