Adventure Guides and Local Experts

Smithsonian Active Journeys adventure guides are highly accomplished professionals who know their regions like the back of their hands and are key to the success of every trip. Among this enthusiastic, resourceful, and highly competent team we have naturalists, conservationists, photographers, mountaineers, rafters, and intrepid explorers. While their talents are varied, all share the same qualities of a superb cultural liaison, skilled adventurer, and translator. You will also find that each is a strong leader, cheerleader, problem-solver, and safety nut, plus a fun co-traveler and new-found friend.

Most are locals who live in-country year-round, and others are so in love with the place that it has become their second home. We learn from our guides and are inspired by them every step of the way.

You’ll receive more detailed information about your adventure guide closer to your departure.

Smithsonian Active Journeys feature special arrangements with local experts to further enhance your journey. Their contributions give additional insight into the awe-inspiring landscapes and provide the opportunity for real immersion in your destination. Our local experts have an in-depth understanding of history, culture, or the natural world and make our programs uniquely special.
