Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive in Phoenix

Arrive in Phoenix, Arizona and settle into your accommodations. This evening, meet with your Smithsonian Journeys Expert, expedition manager, and fellow travelers for a reception and dinner at the hotel. (R,D)

Day 2 — Phoenix to Grand Canyon National Park

This morning, you’ll be on your way to the Grand Canyon. There are a number of possible stops along the way – short hikes and fascinating natural and geological features –and your guide will choose the best ones for the weather and the group. Arriving at the Grand Canyon, you’ll check in to your *hotel room. There will be time to relax or take a short stroll along the Rim Trail before dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 3 — Grand Canyon National Park

After breakfast, you will hit the trail with your knowledgeable naturalist guide leading the way. There are a number of trail possibilities, each one extraordinary! Your guides will share their knowledge of the area’s natural and human history making for a real insider’s experience of the South Rim and its famous viewpoints and features. After the hike, return to the *Lodge to freshen up. Catching the sunset is something of a ritual in the park, and your guide gets the group to the best vantage point to enjoy the show. After sunset, enjoy dinner in a cozy South Rim restaurant. (B,L,D)

Day 4 — Grand Canyon National Park

If you loved the sunset last night, set your alarm for the optional pre-breakfast sunrise photo opportunity. After breakfast, you’ll have another full day of exploring and hiking in the park. Tonight, dine at the historic El Tovar Hotel Dining Room. (B,L,D)

Day 5 — Grand Canyon National Park to Sedona

Relish one more breathtaking view of the Grand Canyon before you are on your way to Sedona. Along the way, you will visit a National Monument near Flagstaff and enjoy lunch, before continuing south. If time allows, you’ll visit Slide Rock State Park to see a natural waterslide and enjoy an easy hike along Oak Creek. When you arrive in Sedona, check into your accommodations, then walk to a neighboring restaurant for some delicious southwestern fare. Later in the evening, you will be joined by a local astronomer who will literally put stars in your eyes! Through his high-powered telescopes, view planets and stars and learn about the composition of constellations scattered above. (B,L,D)

Day 6 — Sedona

After breakfast, you’ll set out on a wonderful hike among the red rock monoliths of Sedona. Back in Sedona, recharge with a hearty lunch at a local restaurant, and then set out on an exciting two-hour jeep tour. Your expedition takes you past some of Sedona’s famous formations, like Bell Rock, Chapel Butte, and the Rock of Gibraltar. This evening at your farewell dinner you will find many reasons to raise a glass and toast to a wonderful journey! (B,L,D)

Day 7 — Sedona to Phoenix / Depart

Rise early this morning for an optional sunrise viewing from a nearby overlook. After breakfast and some last deep breaths of the high desert air, drive back to Phoenix for early afternoon flights home. (B)
