Mountain Gorilla View Lodge

Kinigi, Rwanda

The stone and thatch chalets of Mountain Gorilla View Lodges are scattered across tropical gardens on a slope that looks out over peaks of Volcanoes National Park. Each spacious chalet has a sitting area, a fireplace, an ensuite bathroom, and a private veranda. The main building features an open-plan lounge and bar area centered around an open fire, which makes a pleasant space in which to socialize with your fellow guests. There’s also a separate dining room with large windows looking out to the volcanoes, and a wooden deck should you wish to drink and dine al fresco. Traditional African décor and artwork brightens the walls, and the friendly staff provide friendly service, even cleaning your boots for you after your treks.

Fairmont The Norfolk

Nairobi, Kenya

First opened in 1904, the Norfolk has long been a gathering place for adventurers, expats, and businesspeople. This Nairobi landmark has seen the city grown up around it, and remains a sanctuary of tranquil gardens and old-world charm. Rooms and suites are tastefully appointed and offer modern conveniences and patios or balconies overlooking the courtyard gardens. Two restaurants serve excellent cuisine; a stylish bar with indoor and outdoor seating offers tapas and drinks; and guests can enjoy afternoon tea and Kenyan coffee in an elegant lounge. The hotel also features a heated swimming pool, a fitness center, and a spa with a steam bath and sauna.

Karen Blixen Camp

Mara North Conservancy, Kenya

Situated in the community-owned Mara North Conservancy, this Danish-owned camp is set right beside the Mara River. When not out exploring the conservancy, you can sit out and watch the resident hippo pod in the water or grazing along the banks, view birds through your binoculars, or watch zebra coming to drink. Each of the 22 raised canvas tents have a spacious deck overlooking the river, a large en suite bathroom and an outdoor shower.  While most of your time is spent on game drives, you can also opt to do a walking safari, take a dawn hot air balloon ride, or visit a Maasai village. Around camp, you can visit the on-site cooking school, plant a tree, and find out more about the camp’s environmental initiatives by joining an eco walk. Meals are served on individual tables in the dining area, in front of the river, or out in the bush. In the evenings, a campfire is lit for guests to gather around.
