Eric Roorda

Prof. Eric Paul Roorda is a Professor of History at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky.  During the summer, he directs the Munson Institute graduate program in Maritime Studies at Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut.  The Caribbean Sea is Dr. Roorda’s area of specialization, in particular its diplomatic and naval history.  He is the author of books on Cuba (Cuba, America and the Sea) and the Dominican Republic (The Dictator Next Door and the forthcoming The Dominican Republic Reader: History, Culture, Politics), and has contributed articles to The Oxford Encyclopedia of Maritime History, The Encyclopedia of the Caribbean, The Encyclopedia of the Cold War, Latin America during World War II and America and the Sea.  He studied at The College of William and Mary as an undergraduate and The Johns Hopkins University for his graduate studies. 

Eric comes from a seafaring family in Holland: his grandfather was a First Engineer in the Dutch Merchant Marine whose ships were sunk twice during World War I, and his great-grandfather worked on Zuiderzee ferries.
