Join us at Chautauqua in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment. During a thought-provoking week, attend lectures and discussions by major thought leaders on the topic of woman’s suffrage as well as the contemporary issues surrounding woman’s rights and position in modern society. For more than a century, southwestern New York’s Chautauqua Institution has been a renowned summertime destination for educational pursuits, hosting an astonishing array of programs clustered around specific “theme weeks.”

Highlights Include

  • ​Engaging Discussions: Attend Main Stage scholar lecture series and listen to thought leaders discuss such topics as woman’s suffrage, the history of gender bias, and the Equal Rights Amendment. Delve into questions surrounding the increasing representation of women in government positions and on the ballot today. Plus, enjoy daily in-depth presentations by your Smithsonian Journeys Expert and learn about the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative.
  • Performances: Immerse yourself in Chautauqua’s theater and musical performances through selected included event tickets and attend other planned activities each day!
  • Historic Hotel: Stay at the Athenaeum Hotel, situated in a central location and within walking distance to all activities. Your stay features all meals, comfortable accommodations, and sweeping views of Lake Chautauqua.

Overview of your week at Chautauqua — July 25 – August 1, 2020 ​

Each morning gather for a full breakfast buffet, then take your morning coffee out to the majestic front porch of the Hotel Athenaeum for sweeping views of Lake Chautauqua. Afterward, attend a daily private lecture with your Smithsonian Journeys Expert. Each day then features a sumptuous lunch followed by an afternoon to explore Chautauqua activities on your own, including Main Stage lectures (a full program of activities will be provided). Gather in the evening for lively conversation and a festive dinner, followed by a performance or other activity. (Each day: B,L,D)
