Overview
Nestled along sparkling Lake Chautauqua in southwestern New York, the Chautauqua Institution is a unique community that evokes the friendliness and charm of a bygone era. With an astonishing array of programs clustered around specific “theme weeks,” Chautauqua has become a renowned summertime destination and a center for lifelong educational pursuits. Enjoy our comprehensive program — including event tickets for Chautauqua opera, theater, and music performances; all meals; and accommodations at the historic Hotel Athenaeum, located within walking distance to all events. Join us for a week and explore the story of America’s westward expansion. As Chautauqua prepares for a celebration of Lewis and Clark’s expedition, noted scholars will focus on the history and geography of America’s frontier. Attend these lectures through the Chautauqua Main Stage Events, plus enjoy exclusive, in-depth discussions with Smithsonian expert Harry Fritz. Immersed in the inquisitive nature of Chautauqua, you’ll learn about what our nation gained—artistically, culturally, politically, economically—from westward expansion.

July 19 — Welcome to Chautauqua
Gather for a welcome reception in the Hotel Athenaeum parlor with fellow travelers and Study Leader Harry Fritz. A full packet of information on all the activities and offerings at Chautauqua will be given to you at this time. After remarks by your Study Leader, enjoy dinner in the main dining room. Each evening you'll have a five-course meal with an average serving time of two hours. This evening enjoy a concert in the Amphitheater. (D)

July 20-25 — Overview of your week at Chautauqua
Each morning gather for a full breakfast buffet. Then take your morning coffee out to the majestic front porch of the Hotel Athenaeum for sweeping views of Lake Chautauqua. After breakfast, attend daily private lectures with Harry Fitz. Mr. Fritz will offer in-depth discussions of the key events during America’s expansion and provide amusing stories and interesting facts about the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

After each morning lecture, stroll down to the Amphitheatre for presentations by daily Main Stage speakers, all leading authorities on American History and the American West. Each day, enjoy a sumptuous lunch followed by an afternoon to explore Chautauqua on your own (a full program of activities will be provided). Gather in the evening for lively conversation and a festive dinner, followed by evening performances and activities. (Each day: B,L,D)
