Overview

Thanks to the popular musical Hamilton, Americans have been captivated by the often-overlooked story of one of our most influential Founding Fathers: Alexander Hamilton. Gain insight into Alexander Hamilton's early life in Nevis, the smaller of the two islands comprising the nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean, during a voyage aboard the elegant tall ship Sea Cloud II. Plus, enjoy modern pleasures such as swimming and snorkeling.

Highlights Include

  • Nevis: Learn about Alexander Hamilton's Caribbean roots at his childhood home, which now houses the Nevis House of Assembly, and stroll through a spectacular botanic garden featuring tropical plants, orchid terraces, and a rainforest conservancy.
  • St. Kitts: Trace the history of this small Caribbean island, which helped to shape the course of the American Revolution. Visit Brimstone Hill, a World Heritage site known as "the Gibraltar of the West Indies" for its extensive battery.
  • St. Eustatius: This small Dutch island was once one of the world’s busiest seaports. Enjoy time at leisure or explore the island's colorful architecture.
  • St. Barthélemy: Swim at exquisite white-sand beaches and snorkel in clear blue waters.
  • Iles des Saintes: Step ashore at the 17th-century Fort Napoleon, site of a significant naval battle between exotic gardens.
  • St. Lucia: Soak in mineral-rich mud baths fed by Soufrière Volcano or tour the lush Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens.

Our Smithsonian tour was a true delight. These days, it is rare to receive such an outstanding value. We look forward to many more tours, and they all will be with Smithsonian.

Arrive in Barbados this afternoon and transfer to Sea Cloud II for a seven-night cruise. (D)

Day 2 — Day at Sea

Enjoy a day at sea as Sea Cloud II takes full advantage of the trade winds. Tonight the captain hosts welcome cocktails, followed by dinner. (B,L,R,D)

Day 3 — Charlestown, Nevis

Discover the island of Nevis, the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton. On St. Kitts, the first permanent English settlement in the Caribbean, visit imposing Brimstone Hill. This World Heritage Site is known as “the Gibraltar of the West Indies” for its extensive battery. Discover the gardens of Romney Manor, an 18th-century plantation house formerly owned by a direct ancestor of Thomas Jefferson. After lunch aboard Sea Cloud II, arrive at the small Dutch island of St. Eustatius, once one of the world’s busiest seaports.
