Our Smithsonian tour was a true delight. These days, it is rare to receive such an outstanding value. We look forward to many more tours, and they all will be with Smithsonian.

Overview

Thanks to the popular musical Hamilton, Americans have been captivated by the often-overlooked story of one of our most influential Founding Fathers: Alexander Hamilton. Gain insight into Alexander Hamilton's early life in Nevis, the smaller of the two islands comprising the nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean, during a voyage aboard the elegant tall ship Sea Cloud. Plus, enjoy modern pleasures such as swimming and snorkeling.

Highlights Include

  • Nevis: Learn about Alexander Hamilton's Caribbean roots at his childhood home, which now houses the Nevis House of Assembly, and stroll through a spectacular botanic garden featuring tropical plants, orchid terraces, and a rainforest conservancy.
  • St. Kitts: Trace the history of this small Caribbean island, which helped to shape the course of the American Revolution. Visit Brimstone Hill, a World Heritage site known as "the Gibraltar of the West Indies" for its extensive battery.
  • St. Eustatius: This small Dutch island was once one of the world’s busiest seaports. Enjoy time at leisure or explore the island's colorful architecture.
  • St. Barthélemy: Swim at exquisite white-sand beaches and snorkel in clear blue waters.
  • Iles des Saintes: Step ashore at the 17th-century Fort Napoleon, site of a significant naval battle between exotic gardens.
  • St. Lucia: Soak in mineral-rich mud baths fed by Soufrière Volcano or tour the lush Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens.

*During this voyage, we will share the ship with other leading cultural and educational institutions, which will add to the excitement and energy of the experience.

Arrive in Barbados this afternoon and transfer to Sea Cloud for a seven-night cruise. (D)

Day 2 — Soufriere, St. Lucia

Anchor this afternoon in the Bay of Soufrière, tucked between the dramatic Anse des Pitons. Soak in mineral-rich mud baths fed by Soufrière Volcano, or tour the lush Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens. (B,L,D)

Day 3 — Day at Sea

Enjoy a day under sail as Sea Cloud takes full advantage of the trade winds. Attend lectures and watch the crew practice the art of setting the sails by hand, or perhaps settle into a comfortable deck chair with a favorite book. Tonight join the captain for welcome cocktails, followed by dinner. (B,L,R,D)

Day 4 — Charlestown, Nevis

Arrive today at the island of Nevis, the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton.  Visit his childhood home, now the Nevis House of Assembly and a history museum, before exploring the island's spectacular botanic garden. This five-acre property contains orchid terraces, various tropical plants, and a rainforest conservancy. (B,L,D)

Day 5 — Basseterre / St. Kitts / Oranjestad / St. Eustatius

On St. Kitts, the first permanent English settlement in the Caribbean and the home of Alexander Hamilton's mother for many years, visit imposing Brimstone Hill. This World Heritage Site is known as “the Gibraltar of the West Indies” for its extensive battery. Discover the gardens of Romney Manor, an 18th-century plantation house formerly owned by a direct ancestor of Thomas Jefferson.

After lunch onboard, arrive on the small Dutch island of St. Eustatius, once one of the busiest seaports in the world. You may choose to join an optional architectural walking tour through the town or explore this charming island on your own. (B,L,D)

Day 6 — Gustavia, St. Barthelemy

Arrive in small but cosmopolitan St. Barthélemy.  Experience the island's French savoir-faire as we stroll past stylish cafés and boutiques.  Swimmers will have an opportunity to enjoy one of many beautiful beaches.
