Ed Laine

For over three decades, Ed Laine has been helping Bowdoin College students learn oceanography, marine geology, and marine geophysics by focused study of the South Pacific and Southern Ocean. He has carried out ocean research in the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific, and Southern oceans as well as the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Gulf of Maine and has led 10 major deep sea expeditions. Interests include deep currents eroding the sea floor, the Gulf Stream, the ice age ocean, sea level change, radioactive waste, and harmful algal blooms (red tides). At Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine he has been Director of the Environmental Studies Program and Chair of the Departments of Geology/Earth and Oceanographic Science.
