Set off on a worldwide wildlife adventure and come face-to-face with amazing animals found in their natural habitats. This 20-day itinerary immerses you in the planet’s diverse ecosystems for an up-close look at rare and iconic animals, birds, and marine life, accompanied by a top Smithsonian scientist.

Highlights Include:

  • Search for the magnificent bird of paradise in the Highland jungles of Papua New Guinea
  • See orangutans that were rescued or orphaned being rehabilitated at a special center in Borneo
  • Look for the iconic Bengal tiger as well as leopard, gray langur monkey, and more in India’s Ranthambore National Park
  • Identify the “Big Five”—lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, elephant, and rhino—on Tanzania’s Serengeti Plain or Ngorongoro Crater
  • Hike through verdant bamboo forests of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park to visit endangered mountain gorillas and watch these gentle giants in their natural habitat.

Itinerary

Days 1 & 2 — Kona, Hawaii

Meet fellow guests and expedition leaders at a welcome dinner. From your beautiful beachside resort, venture out into the warm, clear waters of the Pacific to spot migrating humpback whales, dolphins, and Hawaiian green sea turtles.

Days 3-6 — Papua New Guinea

After crossing the International Date Line and losing a day, spend a night in Port Moresby, the capital city of Papua New Guinea. Then ascend to the Highlands in search of the magnificent bird of paradise or spot cockatoos, parrots, hornbills, cormorants, and more while exploring the wild tropical lowland forest along the banks of the Karawari River.

Days 7 & 8 — Borneo, Malaysia

Visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center—the oldest and largest in the world—to see orangutans that were rescued or orphaned and are now being conditioned to return to their natural habitat. If time permits, observe endemic proboscis monkeys as well as hornbills, kingfishers, and other colorful tropical birds.

Days 9-12 — Ranthambore National Park or Kanha National Park and Jaipur

Immerse yourself in the cultural treasures of the Pink City of Jaipur, historic capital of Rajasthan. Then, delve into the former hunting grounds of the maharajah of Jaipur to search for the iconic Bengal tiger as well as leopards, sloth bears, wild boar, striped hyenas, and the rare hard-ground swamp deer.

Days 13-15 — Serengeti Plain or Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

Days 16-18 — Kigali and Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Explore Kigali, Rwanda’s capital and cultural heart, and then hike through the verdant bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park to visit endangered mountain gorillas and watch these gentle giants munch leaves, groom each other, and play in the forest.

Days 19 & 20 — London, England, Depart for U.S.

Relax and enjoy a casual meal and a night’s rest before returning home on your independent flight.
