Uganda and Rwanda Gorilla Safari

  • Both Smithsonian Experts are curators at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Kris Helgen is a research zoologist who is renowned for discovering new mammal species worldwide. Don Wilson was named a senior scientist and directed the Smithsonian’s biodiversity programs for 10 years. Kris and Don lead the March and August departures respectively.
  • Track and spend time observing the endangered mountain gorillas, of which only 740 survive, through the primeval forests of Uganda and Rwanda.
  • Experience up-close encounters with various wildlife, including hippos, Ugandan Kob, elephants, and lions in three national parks in East Africa.
  • Learn about primate behavior from Kris Helgen (March departure) and Don Wilsom (August departure) from the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, and researchers at the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project.
  • Observe chimpanzee behavior at a daily feeding at the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary and track chimpanzees in Kyambura Gorge.
  • Cross the Equator in Uganda, one of the 14 countries or territories where you can do this.
