Sea Cloud
Step aboard Sea Cloud and be transported to the intoxicating golden age of sailing aboard a vessel as elegant and lively today as when heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her tycoon husband E.F. Hutton launched her in the 1930s.
The Huttons created the largest, most opulent private sailing yacht ever built, and they played host to notables of the era, including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and King Gustavus V of Sweden, who would later regale companions with tales of their adventures aboard the ship.
In World War II, Sea Cloud earned five brass chevrons while patrolling the heart of German wolfpack territory around the Azores and England. Then in 1978 she was outfitted in her original shipyard to carry 58 guests in tremendous luxury. Again in 2011 she underwent extensive renovations to ensure her status as the world’s finest tall ship and a true “legend under white sails.”
Thirty-four thousand square feet of canvas unfurl from yardarms to catch the wind — enough sail to cover a city block. Her towering masts are as tall as a 20-story building. She is capable of great speed under sail and covering distances beyond 150 miles per day.
Outfitted with the latest navigational equipment, Sea Cloud embodies a harmony of modern and age-old traditions. Courses are charted, weather is checked and communications are handled via satellite and computer. And meanwhile sails are mended by hand and run up by sailors expert in a seldom-seen craft — hand sailing a square-rigged barque.
The island destinations and archaeological sites chosen for this itinerary are perfectly spaced to allow easy access while sailing. And there will be ample time to savor passage aboard Sea Cloud as she heels slightly under a gentle Caribbean breeze.
Interiors are paneled in carved oak, fitted with Italian marble and elegantly furnished with period antiques. Parquet floors shine and burnished brass still glows. Original marine oil paintings grace the yacht’s walls.
The magnificent original cabins feature fireplaces and marble baths, and the newer staterooms are handsome and spacious with wood paneling and a nautical motif — and all cabins have a private view of the sea. MEALS: Served in a single seating in the elegant dining room, meals focus on local and Continental cuisine. Wines are included at lunch and dinner. Refreshments are always available.
