October 18 — Valletta, Malta / Mdina, Malta
Arrive this morning in Valletta,and drive to the quaint town of Rabat and the historic capital of Mdina, where three hundred people still live within the city’s medieval walls. Here we explore St. Paul’s Catacombs, the earliest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. Also see the Domus Romana, a first-century B.C.E. Roman house with exquisitely crafted and preserved mosaics. Continue to one of the oldest freestanding temples in the world, the Neolithic Temple of Hagar Qim. Following lunch, check into the landmark Phoenicia Hotel in the historic city center of Valletta. The afternoon and evening are at leisure. (B, L)
October 19 — Valletta, Malta
Today explore the capital of Malta, where an extraordinary concentration of historic and prehistoric areas has earned it the status of UNESCO World Heritage site. Begin this morning with a stroll through the Old Town, and continue to St. John’s Cathedral, housing Caravaggio’s masterpiece The Beheading of St. John the Baptist. View impressive tapestries and armor at the Palace of the Grand Masters. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. In the early evening, attend a private reception at Casa Rocca Piccola, a splendid 16th-century palazzo, by invitation of the Marquis de Piro. Gather this evening for our farewell dinner. (B, R, D)
