Disembark this morning in St. Petersburg, which Peter the Great transformed from marshland into a vibrant city of islands, canals, bridges and pastel-colored palaces. Drive to Peterhof to see the Cottage Palace, favorite residence of Nicholas I. Visit Mon Plaisir Palace or try to outsmart the trick fountains of the lower gardens. See the Bath House of the Tsar before returning to St. Petersburg by private hydrofoil for check-in at the Grand Hotel Europe. Dinner is at leisure. (B,L)

This morning visit the baroque Winter Palace, where you are invited to enter the Hermitage Museum on a day when it is closed to the public. The museum’s four hundred rooms contain spectacular examples of nearly all schools of Western art, including one of the greatest collections of French Impressionist works. Following lunch, the afternoon is at leisure. Alternatively, tour the immense collection of Russian masterpieces in the State Russian Museum, located next to the hotel. This evening attend a White Nights Festival concert or performance at the renowned Mariinsky Theatre. (B,L)

Begin today at Pavlovsk Palace, built in the 18th century for Catherine’s son, Paul I, by Scottish architect Charles Cameron. The palace is beautifully appointed with furniture, bronze ware, china, and antique sculpture. Continue to the Tsar’s Village for a specially arranged visit to Catherine’s Palace on a day when it is closed to the public. See the exquisitely recreated Amber Room and stroll in the formal gardens. Lunch is at Podvorye, a restaurant in a traditional Russian log house. Return to St. Petersburg for a canal cruise under the city’s historic bridges and past its magnificent pastel palaces. This evening, celebrate a memorable journey at our farewell dinner at an elegant rooftop restaurant. (B,L,D)
