    Overview
  • Introduce your kids to the wonders of nature on our new Panama program. In the Chiriqui highlands, you’ll enjoy a thrilling whitewater rafting adventure and soar through the tropical cloud forest canopy on a zip line for a total adrenaline rush. In Bocas del Toro, walk a rain forest trail alive with sloths, monkeys, birds, caimans, and more. Observe amazing marine life as you snorkel among coral reefs and mangroves. Every day of your itinerary includes exciting and memorable activities in some of the world’s most important ecosystems.

You’ll also give practical context to your children’s history and science lessons with an up-close exploration of the Panama Canal and the massive Miraflores Locks. By special arrangement with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), you'll visit the Punta Culebra Nature Center and learn about the conservation of delicate marine habitats. You’ll also ride a motorized dugout canoe, or piragua, up the Chagres River to an Emberá indigenous village, where villagers will share some of their traditions. Join us on this new tour to Panama for families with children ages 8 and older and discover the abundant treasures of one of the planet’s richest ecological paradises.
  • Special Highlights
  • Experience the wonders of the Panama Canal. Take a jungle boat expedition across Gatun Lake, past giant cargo and passenger ships, as well as plenty of animals – iguanas, crocodiles, and all sorts of monkeys. Visit the Miraflores Visitor Center, on the east side of the enormous Miraflores Locks, and observe the operations of this engineering marvel from a close distance as huge ocean-bound ships are ushered through the locks.
  • Meet the indigenous Emberá people. A motorized piragua (dugout canoe) ride takes your family up the Chagres River through the rain forest. As you enter a native Emberá village, you’ll be greeted with traditional music and dancing. Learn from the Emberá about their customs and close relationship with nature, and enjoy a traditional lunch.
  • Go behind the scenes at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI). Learn from the best about the scientific research being performed around Panama. Visit STRI’s Punta Culebra Nature Center, an open-air museum focusing on marine science and marine coastal conservation efforts. Later, head to the Caribbean Ocean Research Station, where research scientists study the plant and animal life found in the waters. A STRI staff member will lead you through the laboratories of the facility and give your family the inside scoop.
  • Enjoy exciting adventures such as whitewater rafting and a zip line in the Chiriqui region. Enjoy the adventure of whitewater rafting with your family and soar through the tropical cloud forest canopy on a zip line, flying high over the trees for a thrilling rush of adrenaline.
  • Learn how native cocoa is made into chocolate. In the Ngobe indigenous village of Silico Creek, see how organic cocoa is grown and processed into decadent chocolate.
  • Experience the native flora and fauna of the rain forest and learn about rain forest ecology. In Bastimentos Marine National Park, follow a local guide through a tropical lowland wet rain forest trail teeming with wildlife, such as sloths, monkeys, tropical birds, caimans, and poison dart frogs. You’ll also explore two other valuable ecosystems as you snorkel around coral reef and mangroves—and observe angel fish, squid, octopus, and other marine life.
