Overview

Join us in 2017 to celebrate two major Canadian anniversaries: the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation and the 375th anniversary of the city of Montréal! Spend three nights each in Montréal and Québec and delve into the art, architecture, culture, and history that make up these special cities.

Highlights Include

  • Montréal: Learn about the city’s earliest history in Vieux-Montréal, then visit the Basilique Notre-Dame, known for its Gothic Revival architecture and stained glass windows. Visit the studio of a prominent stained glass craftsman. Enjoy tours of the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts and Le Musée du Château Dufresne, a museum housed in a Beaux Arts-style mansion once owned by a prominent French family. Visit the Jacques Cartier Bridge to see the interactive illumination set to mark Montréal’s 375th anniversary.
  • Québec: Take a walking tour of the Upper Town and visit the Ursuline Convent, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, and the Parliament Building. Spend time exploring the Lower Town, part of the Old Québec area, a World Heritage site. Explore the Museum of Civilization, designed by Moshe Safdie, then celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada with a cocktail reception aboard one of the 50 tall ships scheduled to dock in Québec Port.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Depart the U.S. for Montréal, Canada

Arrive in Montréal and transfer to the Le Crystal Hotel. Tonight, enjoy a welcome reception and dinner at a local restaurant. (B,R,D) 

Day 2 — Vieux-Montréal

Begin the morning with a walking tour through the city’s historic center, including the Place d’Armes, the site of Montréal’s birthplace, and stroll through the winding French colonial streets, finishing at the beautiful City Hall building. Enjoy lunch at a local café and continue to tour the Vieux-Port neighborhood. Visit the Basilique Notre-Dame, known for its gothic revival architecture and stained glass windows, depicting scenes from Montréal’s religious history. End the day with a drive up to Parc du Mont-Royal for a panoramic view of the city. Tonight, enjoy dinner on your own. (B,L) 

Day 3 — The Art and Architecture of Montréal

This morning, visit the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts for a guided tour of the extensive collection. Enjoy lunch on your own, followed by some free time to continue your exploration of the museum. This afternoon, visit Le Musée du Château Dufresne, a museum housed in a beaux arts-style private mansion, once belonging to French Bourgeoisie. Tour the mansion to view the rich collection of French furniture and furnishings. Then visit the studio of Florentine artist Guido Nincheri, a prominent stained glass craftsman whose work is enjoyed across Canada and New England. Tonight, enjoy dinner as a group at a local restaurant. Following dinner, visit the Jacques Cartier Bridge to view the interactive illumination set to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation and Montréal’s 375th anniversary. (B,D) 

Day 4 — Montréal to Québec

Drive up Saint Laurent Boulevard through Jewish, Greek, and Italian neighborhoods to visit Marché Jean-Talon. Learn about Montréal’s culinary scene with a guided tour through one of North America’s largest markets. Continue to the Montréal train station to board the train to Québec City. Lunch will be served on the train. Arrive in Québec City in the late afternoon and transfer to your hotel. Tonight, enjoy a group dinner at a local restaurant. (B,L,D) 

Day 5 — Québec City

Begin the morning with an introductory lecture on Québec City, followed by a walking tour of the Upper Town. Visit the Ursuline Convent to learn about the oldest learning institution for women in North America, and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity for a guided tour. Enjoy lunch at Le Parlementaire, located in the Parliament building of the Québec National Assembly, followed by a tour of the building. End the day with a visit to the Observatoire de la Capitale for a 360-degree panoramic view of beautiful Québec City. The remainder of the evening and dinner is at leisure. (B,L) 

Day 6 — Québec City

Today, learn about the influences of the French and British on the architecture throughout Québec. Take a walking tour of Lower Town, part of the Old Québec area, which is a World Heritage site. Enjoy lunch in Lower Town before visiting the Museum of Civilization, a Moshe Safdie designed building. Enjoy a guided tour of the Museum, learning about the long history of the people of Québec. Later, enjoy a visit to the Port of Québec to view the fleet of forty tall ships, on display for a special 150th anniversary celebration of the Canadian Confederation. Tour one of the tall ships, learning about the history of the majestic sailing vessels, before enjoying a private cocktail reception on board. Tonight, enjoy a farewell dinner at the prestigious Garrison Club, a historic club with over 130 years of history. (B,L,R,D)

Day 7 — Depart Québec City for the U.S.

Check out of the hotel and transfer to the airport for individual flights home. (B)
