Day 1 — New York, NYIndividuals arrive at the Grand Hyatt New York in New York City. In the evening, enjoy a welcome reception at the hotel followed by dinner on your own. (R)
Day 2 — New YorkAfter breakfast, visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and tour the newly reopened American Wing, featuring the spectacular Hudson School galleries. There will be time to peruse the other galleries featuring the finest and most comprehensive collections of American Master paintings and sculptures in the world. This afternoon, embark the
American Glory for lunch and an afternoon cruising along the Hudson while enjoying the splendid fall colors. Tammis Groft will give the first in a series of lectures. (B,L,D)
Day 3 — YonkersOur day begins with a private visit to Lyndhurst, the Gothic Revival mansion designed by Alexander Jackson Davis. On 67 acres overlooking the Hudson River, Lyndhurst has an extensive collection of Victorian decorative arts. Next, visit the Union Church of Pocantico Hills to view the famous stained-glass windows by Chagall and Matisse. Following lunch visit Kykuit, the palatial estate that was home to three generations of the Rockefeller family. At this 40 room Colonial Revival Mansion, you can view the family’s superb collection of art, antiques, and lovely sculpture-filled gardens. Return to the ship for dinner as we cruise to West Point. Day 4 — West PointAt West Point, visit the United States Military Academy, founded in 1802. Included is a visit to the imposing Cadet Chapel, a superb example of Military Gothic architecture with its beautiful stained-glass windows and the world’s largest church organ. Learn about James McNeill Whistler’s time spent as a cadet. End the tour with a walk through Trophy Point. Following lunch aboard the ship, enjoy a guided tour of Boscobel House and Gardens. The surrounding grounds and gardens are situated on 45 acres and offer visitors memorable views of the Hudson Highlands and the Hudson River. (B,L,D)
Day 5 — Troy & AlbanyIn the morning, visit the Albany Institute of History & Art, dedicated to the history, art, and culture of Albany and the upper Hudson Valley including its impressive Hudson River School collection. Next, visit the Empire State Plaza Art Collection featuring works from 20th-century American Abstract Expressionist and Color Field paintings and sculpture, which are on display in public areas throughout the Empire State Plaza. Day 6 — Catskill & KingstonToday, tour Cedar Grove, the home and studio of Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School of painting. The galleries and studio contain his artwork and artifacts of other Hudson River School artists. In the afternoon tour Frederic Church’s Moorish-style castle, Olana, often called the most beautiful artist’s home in America. Built high on a hill, Olana offers magnificent views of the Catskill Mountains, the Hudson River and the Taconic Hills. Depart Catskill and enjoy magnificent views of foliage along the river’s palisades. (B,L,D)
Day 7 — Kingston & PoughkeepsieBegin the day with a tour of Wilderstein Villa. Experience Wilderstein’s Victorian architecture and landscape, view the original interiors of the Suckley home and learn about the life of Margaret (Daisy) Suckley and her remarkable friendship with Franklin Delano Roosevelt. After lunch, travel to Hyde Park to tour the home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Walk through rooms filled with history, including the room from which he gave his famous fireside chats. Afterwards, explore the Presidential Library, Museum, and the new Henry Wallace Visitors Center, which contains exhibits of Roosevelt’s childhood, the war, and his presidency. (B,L,D)
Day 8 — Poughkeepsie & New YorkThis morning, tour Locust Grove, the 150-acre estate of Samuel L. Morse. This historic site includes an Italianate villa designed by Alexander Jackson Davis containing extensive collections of American and European decorative arts. In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely cruise down the Hudson River to New York City. (B,L,D)
