Experience the blazing fall colors of the Hudson River Valley, often the subject of paintings by Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and Jasper Cropsey, during this popular and unique cruise accompanied by art scholar Jason LaFountain. From New York City to Albany, you’ll visit fine Hudson Valley museums and historic homes of literary, artistic, and political figures. Highlights feature the homes and studios of artists Church, Cole, and Cropsey; the vast American art collections at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Albany Institute of History and Art; and Kykuit, the palatial home and art collection of the Rockefeller family. You’ll also enjoy private tours of the Gothic Revival mansion, Lyndhurst; Fredric Church’s Moorish-style home, Olana; the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Your visit to Hyde Park includes Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s home; the Presidential Library and Museum plus you’ll visit to the Francis Lehman Loeb Art Center on the picturesque campus of Vassar College, featuring a fine collection of Hudson School painters and more!
Day 1 — New York City
Individuals arrive at the Grand Hyatt New York in New York City. In the evening, enjoy a welcome reception at the hotel followed by dinner on your own. (R)
Day 2 — New York City
The ideal introduction to your cruise is a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the newly reopened American Wing, featuring the spectacular Hudson School galleries. There will be time to peruse other galleries featuring the finest and most comprehensive collections of American Master paintings and sculptures in the world. This afternoon, embark your ship and enjoy lunch and an afternoon of cruising the Hudson with the splendid fall colors in the background. (B,L,D)
Day 3 — Yonkers
Our day begins with a private visit to Lyndhurst, the Gothic Revival mansion designed by Alexander Jackson Davis. On 67 acres overlooking the Hudson River, Lyndhurst has an extensive collection of Victorian decorative arts. Next, visit the Union Church of Pocantico Hills to view the famous stained-glass windows by Chagall and Matisse. Following lunch, visit Kykuit, the palatial estate that was home to three generations of the Rockefeller family. At this 40 room Colonial Revival Mansion, you can view the family’s superb collection of art, antiques, and lovely sculpture-filled gardens. Return to the ship for dinner as we cruise to West Point. Day 4 — West Point & Hyde Park
At West Point, visit the United States Military Academy, founded in 1802. Included is a visit to the imposing Cadet Chapel, a superb example of Military Gothic architecture with its beautiful stained-glass windows and the world’s largest church organ. Learn about James McNeill Whistler’s time spent here as a cadet. End the tour with a walk through Trophy Point. Following lunch aboard ship, travel to Hyde Park to tour the home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Walk through rooms filled with history, including the room from which he gave his famous fireside chats. Afterwards, explore the Presidential Library, Museum, and the new Henry Wallace Visitors Center, which contains exhibits of Roosevelt’s childhood, the war, and his presidency. (B,L,D)
Day 5 — Poughkeepsie
After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of the Francis Lehman Loeb Art Center on the campus of Vassar College. Tour the galleries of the Hudson River School painters. In the afternoon, enjoy the spectacular palisades of the Hudson River Valley sparkling with fall colors as we cruise to Troy. (B,L,D)
Day 6 — Troy & Albany
Visit the Albany Institute of History & Art, dedicated to the history, art, and culture of Albany and the upper Hudson Valley including its impressive Hudson River School collection. Next, visit the Empire State Plaza Art Collection featuring works from 20th-century American Abstract Expressionist and Color Field paintings and sculpture, which are on display in public areas throughout the Empire State Plaza. Day 7 — Catskill & Kingston
Today, tour Frederic Church’s Moorish-style castle, Olana, often called the most beautiful artist’s home in America. Built high on a hill, Olana offers magnificent views of the Catskill Mountains, the Hudson River and the Taconic Hills. Depart Catskill and enjoy magnificent views of foliage along the river. In the afternoon, stop at Wilderstein, a stunning Victorian mansion and the former home of Margaret (Daisy) Suckley, a cousin and confidante of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Miss Suckley traveled extensively with FDR during his presidency. (B,L,D)
Day 8 — New York City
A morning cruise along the Hudson River will bring you back to New York City. After lunch onboard, enjoy a narrated tour of the city. This evening, return to the ship for a festive farewell dinner onboard the American Star. (B,L,D)

After breakfast, disembark and transfer to the airport for your flight home. (B)
