Join us to explore the works of these iconic painters and the towns and landscapes that inspired them. Plus, enjoy the culture and cuisine of the French Riviera!

  • Nice: Follow in Matisse’s footsteps as you explore Nice, where the master lived for 40 years, and see some of his most famous works at the Matisse Museum. Visit the breathtaking Marc Chagall Museum and the dynamic Museum of Contemporary Art.
  • St. Paul de Vence and Environs: Tour the collections of the Maeght Foundation and the Musée de St. Paul, plus the ethereal stained-glass Matisse Chapel.
  • Antibes: Take in the stunning Musée Picasso,
set above the rocky shore in a former château. See Picasso’s masterpiece War and Peace at Vallauris, a center for ceramics where he was also a major force.
  • Biot and Cagnes-sur-Mer: Enjoy the collections and gardens of the Fernand Legér Museum and the intimate Renoir Museum, where the painter once lived.
  • St. Tropez: View paintings by Nabis, Fauve, and Cubist painters at the Musée de l’Annonciade. 

Itinerary

Day 1 – Depart the U.S. for Nice, France

Depart the U.S. for Nice on individual flights.

Day 2 – Nice

Arrive in Nice this morning and transfer to the Hotel Splendid. Gather with fellow travelers for a welcome reception and dinner. (R,D)

Day 3 – Nice

After a morning lecture to introduce you to the artists who were inspired by the light and color of the French Riviera, take a guided tour of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Nice, with its fine collection of postwar art. During a walking tour of Nice, follow in the footsteps of Matisse and discover the seascapes and sunlight that inspired him for so many years. See the Promenade des Anglais, where the first major Matisse exhibition was held in 1946. (B)

Day 4 – Vence, St. Paul de Vence

Tour the Maeght Foundation and admire a fascinating collection of paintings, sculpture, ceramics, and mosaics that were assembled by art collectors Aimé and Marguerite Maeght in 1964. Many of the works were designed specifically for the site by their artist friends. After lunch in St. Paul de Vence, continue to the picturesque village of Vence to view the breathtaking Matisse chapel and admire how the simple white walls are bathed in intense colors as the sunlight streams through the stained glass. Conclude the day at the Musée de St. Paul, a showcase for contemporary art. (B,L)

Day 5 – Antibes

After a morning lecture on the genius of Pablo Picasso, drive to the balmy town of Antibes to visit the stunning Musée Picasso, set dramatically above the rocky Mediterranean shores in a former château. Vallauris is a center of contemporary ceramics revived by Picasso; his masterpiece War and Peace is displayed here. Visit the first museum dedicated to the work of Bonnard that opened nearby in 2011. Day 6 – Nice, St. Jean Cap Ferrat

After a morning lecture on Fauvism and Matisse, visit the Matisse Museum in Nice which displays his striking canvasses, bronze sculpture, and engraved works. This afternoon travel to St. Jean Cap Ferrat to take a walk along this dramatic coastline, the inspiration for many artists who visited. The Marc Chagall Museum contains the largest collection of works by the artist set in a peaceful garden in the suburbs of Nice. (B)

Day 7 – Biot, Cagnes-sur-Mer

In Biot this morning, tour the Fernand Léger Museum featuring large-scale architectural ceramic murals, done in Léger’s own interpretation of Cubism, along with many other paintings, sculptures, and sketches. Stroll the beautiful gardens ablaze with lush flowers. After lunch at leisure, visit the intimate Renoir Museum, located in the house where the painter spent the last 12 years of his life. Afterwards enjoy a reception in the beautiful gardens, where Renoir, Matisse and others painted. (B,R)

Day 8 – St. Tropez

Depart for a full-day excursion to St. Tropez, an ancient seaport and popular resort that has long been a retreat for painters and writers since Paul Signac settled here in 1892. Tour the Annonciade, a stunning museum exhibiting the works of prominent painters who spent time here including Signac, Maillol, Matisse and Bonnard. Return to Nice and gather for a farewell reception and dinner. (B,R,D)

Day 9 – Depart Nice

Transfer to Nice airport for individual flights home or continue your journey and transfer to the Paris and Normandy: Masters of Impressionism tour. (B)
