Overview

Experience the wonders of Alaska with your family! During a three-night stay in Talkeetna, take a jet boat ride into the breathtaking wilderness near Denali National Park. Accompanied by expert naturalist guides, you’ll see Alaska’s wildlife up close, including bears, beavers, and eagles. Traveling south, learn about Alaskan traditions as you pan for gold, meet huskies in training for the Iditarod, and talk with a local bush pilot. Plus, take a full-day boat tour of Prince William Sound and get up close to breathtaking glaciers.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Anchorage

Arrive at Anchorage International Airport from your home city where you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy a short orientation reception tonight and then dine independently with your family. 

Day 2 — Anchorage

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel and depart for a morning tour of downtown Anchorage. You’ll visit Late Hood, the busiest seaplane base in the world, with more than 87,000 takeoffs and landings per year! Next, you’ll visit the Alaska Aviation Museum and meet a local Bush Pilot who will regale you with stories of flying in the remote regions of Alaska. This afternoon, learn about the traditions and culture of Native Alaskans at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. You’ll meet with Native Alaskans and see traditional art, dances, and game demonstrations, plus exhibits and traditional Native dwellings. Tonight, celebrate your first full day in Alaska with a welcome dinner in Anchorage. (B,D)

Day 3 — Anchorage, Talkeetna

Depart Anchorage and head to Pyrah’s Pioneer Peak Farm where you will learn about sustainable agriculture and the innovative “Alaska Grown” program from local farmers. Then continue to Talkeetna, the base for expeditions to Denali, where you’ll enjoy a delectable dinner downtown before relaxing for the evening at the lodge overnight. (B,L,D)

Day 4 — Talkeetna, Sustina River

Today, visit Kahiltna Birchworks and learn about one of the rarest, gourmet food products in the world – birch syrup! Visit the forest where they tap the birch trees and taste the different types of treats – from caramel ice cream topping to cream caramels and mustards. Next, explore downtown Talkeetna with your family and enjoy lunch at one of the many local family-run restaurants. This afternoon get out onto the Sustina River on an incredible Wilderness Jet Boat Tour. Your two-hour trip whisks you into the heart of Denali’s amazing wilderness in comfort. As you travel twenty miles of river, an expert naturalist guide will share their knowledge of Denali National Park and Preserve. Your boat will stop by a Dena'ina Indian Encampment, who were the earliest native settlers in the area. You’ll visit the traditional encampment, a trapper’s cabin with its original furnishings and learn about living in "Bush" Alaska at the turn of the century. Tonight, return to Talkeetna and enjoy dinner with your family. (B)

Day 5 — Talkeetna, Byers Lake

Set out on the tranquil waters of Byers Lake, gliding along on an exclusive paddle trip. Watch for resident trumpeter swans, loons and beavers; paddle over pools of spawning salmon; look for the bears and eagles that come to feed on them. Take in the breathtaking views of Denali and the Alaska Mountain Range. During the trip, enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to Talkeetna where the afternoon is free to enjoy. Tonight, you’ll have a delectable dinner in Talkeetna. (B,L,D)

Day 6 — Talkeetna, Girdwood

Visit the home of four-time Iditarod winner Martin Buser at the Happy Trails Kennel. There you’ll learn about the Last Great Race, the art of mushing dogs in Alaska, and how owners focus on the care, health, and training of their dogs. Your next stop is at a Musk Ox Farm, where you’ll learn about this ancient Arctic species. You’ll feel the qiviut that comes off the animals, considered the finest wool in the world. After lunch near the farm, continue to Girdwood for dinner and a restful evening at the Hotel Alyeska Resort. (B,L,D)

Day 7 — Girdwood, Crow Creek Gold Mine

Travel along the scenic Seward Highway stopping at the renowned Crow Creek Gold Mine. Discover the history of gold mining in the most popular recreational gold mining area in Alaska then learn how to pan for gold! This afternoon, travel to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, where you will have a chance to see Alaska’s wildlife – porcupines, reindeer, red foxes, lynx and brown bears – up close. A local guide will teach you and your family about efforts to preserve Alaska’s wildlife. (B,L)

Day 8 — Whittier, Prince William Sound

Travel to the coastal community of Whittier where you will board the 26 Glacier Cruise for a 100-mile boat tour of Prince William Sound. Sail past alpine and tidewater glaciers in College and Harriman Fjord, experiencing breathtaking views of these natural beauties, and enjoy lunch on board the boat. Tonight, return to Girdwood for a festive farewell dinner at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

Day 9 — Depart Anchorage

After breakfast, board your deluxe motorcoach for a scenic transfer to Anchorage for your transfer to the airport in Anchorage for return flights home. (B)
