Marta Ptaszynska, the Helen B. & Frank L. Sulzberger Professor in Music, is a composer of international reputation and a professor of composition at the University of Chicago. Her large list of compositions includes symphonic, chamber, and solo works as well as large opera and oratorio forms. Her opera Mister Marimba had 168 performances at the National Opera in Warsaw and at the Krakow Opera House. Her Holocaust Memorial Cantata gained international recognition when performed several times under the baton of Lord Yehudi Menuhin. Her honors include Guggenheim Fellowship Award, the Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, First Prize at the International Rostrum of Composers at UNESCO in Paris, and the "Officer Cross of Merit" from the government of the Republic of Poland.
