Frank Ackerman recently retired as the Director of the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. His four-decade career of interpreting nature and history for park and museum visitors, predominantly as a National Park Ranger, began in 1967 at Dinosaur National Monument. Following completion of his M.S. in forestry at Colorado State University and service as an Army officer in a Transportation Corps railway battalion, Frank resumed work in the park service with assignments at Grand Canyon and Death Valley National Parks. Starting in 1977 he initiated the interpretive program at then-new Voyageurs National Park before going to Cape Cod National Seashore as Chief of Interpretation and Cultural Resource Management, a post he held for eighteen years. As part of a joint venture between Amtrak and the National Park Service, Frank created an award-winning program of educational commentary aboard passenger trains in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. His current role as a study leader focuses on national parks and heritage railways throughout North America – particularly in the West and in New England.

What Our Travelers Say

I very much like the educational aspect of Smithsonian Journeys...the knowledge of their Experts and their ability to relate that knowledge to us.
