Byron Nordstrom is a historian with special expertise in Scandinavia, diplomatic history, and the 20th century, and also has special interest in Scandinavian literature and art history. A native of Minneapolis, Byron received his M.A. and Ph.D. in history from the University of Minnesota. He recently retired from teaching at Gustavus Adolphus College in 2009, and in the past has also served as a visiting faculty member at the University of Washington, Pacific Lutheran University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of East Anglia. Byron is the editor of The Swedes in Minnesota, compiler and editor of The Dictionary of Scandinavian History, and author of Scandinavia Since 1500, The History of Sweden, and The Culture and Customs of Sweden. He has contributed chapters in books and written articles on various aspects of Swedish-American life in Chicago and Minneapolis, and authored numerous reference work entries on Scandinavian history. He is also the editor of The Swedish-American Historical Quarterly. His research focuses on neighborhood development and the role of organizations in creating and maintaining identities in Swedish America and on Scandinavia in the 1920s and 1930s.
